Kuolemanlaakso Announces New Album “M. Laakso – Vol. 1: The Gothic Tapes”

On August 26th, Kuolemanlaakso comes back, but unlike you’ve never heard the band before. As the title aptly implies, “M. Laakso – Vol. 1: The Gothic Tapes” is the first solo album of Kuolemanlaakso mastermind Laakso.

It showcases a songwriting that is catchier and more varied than ever, and it shall be released internationally by Svart Records. Laakso comments:

“Kuolemanlaakso started out as my one-man solo project, which quickly escalated into a full-action monster with shows in the biggest clubs and metal festivals around Finland. As our singer Kotamäki will be occupied with Swallow the Sun’s touring duties for a long time, I finally had the opportunity to record an actual Kuolemanlaakso solo album.”

He goes on to say, “I chose to do these songs in English, as they demanded a more musical language than Finnish. However, Finnish will always remain the only official language of the non-solo Kuolemanlaakso albums.”

The album was recorded, mixed, and mastered at Woodshed Studio, Germany, by V. Santura, with whom Kuolemanlaakso has worked with since the very beginning of the project’s recording career. Santura also acts as a guitarist and backing vocalist of this special lineup, consisting of him and Kuolemanlaakso members Laakso (vocals, guitar, keys), Tiera (drums), and Usva (bass). The album also features guest performances by Mikko Kotamäki (Kuolemanlaakso, Swallow the Sun), Helena Haaparanta (Crimfall, Valo), and Jaani Peuhu (Iconcrash).

1. Children of the Night
2. Roll the Dice with the Devil
3. Where the River Runs Red
4. The World’s Intolerable Pain
5. She Guides Me in My Dreams
6. No Absolution
7. Deeper into the Unknown
8. My Last Words

Kuolemanlaakso Announces Release Of Debut Album "Uljas Uusi Maailma"

Svart Records has announced November 23rd as the release date for Kuolemanlaakso’s “Uljas uusi maailma.” Featuring members of Chaosweaver, Swallow the Sun, and Barren Earth, and produced by a Triptykon/Dark Fortress member, Kuolemanlaakso’s “Uljas uusi maailma” (“Brave New World”) is the band’s debut album.

The track listing and cover artwork can be viewed below. The following press release was issued about the band:

“Named after one of the lowest, driest, and hottest places on Earth, Kuolemanlaakso (‘Death Valley) took its first breath in the Spring of 2010. The band originally started out as a one-man project of guitarist Laakso (Chaosweaver). Much influenced by Eparistera Daimones of Triptykon, Laakso’s mission was to create an utterly dark and heavy album, full of catchy hooks and originality: a tragically beautiful world all its own.

“It was clear from the start that the lyrics would be recited in Finnish. They were inspired by Eino Leino’s (1878–1926) poem collection Helkavirsiä, the mystique of the Finnish forests, and the morbidity of the modern world.

“The feedback from an unreleased four-song demo recording was so overwhelmingly positive from fellow musicians that Laakso decided to recruit some of them and thus make Kuolemanlaakso a fully operating five-head outfit. And not just anybody, but some of his favourite bandsmen: vocalist Kotamäki (Swallow the Sun, Barren Earth), guitarist Kouta (Chaosweaver, ex-Verjnuarmu), bassist Usva (Elenium, The Nibiruan), and drummer Tiera (Discard, Cult of Endtime).

“The band packed their bags in February 2012 and flew to Woodshed Studio, Germany, which is operated by none other than V. Santura of Triptykon and Dark Fortress fame. Santura not only co-produced, mixed, mastered and engineered the crushing Uljas uusi maailma, but he also provided guest guitars on five tracks on it – upon his own request, as he liked the material so much. So, here it is, Kuolemanlaakso’s first step into darkness, Uljas uusi maailma. Life has definitely found its way…a very, very dark and heavy way.”

1. Minä elän (”I live”)
2. Kuun lapset (”Children of the Moon”)
3. Nostos & Algos
4. Roihusydän (”Blaze Heart”)
5. Etsin (”Searching”)
6. Ikiuni (”The Eternal Sleep”)
7. Uljas uusi maailma (”Brave New World”)
8. Aurinko (”The Sun”)

Malevolence Unveils New Album "Antithetical" Cover Artwork

Portuguese extreme metal act Malevolence has uncovered the artwork for the band’s upcoming third full-length effort “Antithetical.” Malevolence commented on the KKStructures created imagery:

“By portraying the central album conceptual theme fueled by the art of conflict, KKSTRUCTURES in straight involvement with the band twisted an eye-catching visual parallelism dissecting the antithetical contrasts between the positive and negative extremes.

“Transcending the opposites by mode of individual revelation (summon insurgence) whilst erecting a differing perspective throughout exorcising thesis, the visual mind bending design brings forth in the process the social global context trivialization invoking an upheaval synthesis. The fire combustion epitomizes the universal purification (in need) as an unrelenting way of forward critical thinking.”

The follow-up to 1999’s “Martyrialized” was written and produced by Carlos Cariano, recorded by
Paulo Pereira at 20M2SEA Studio (Portugal), and mixed and mastered at Woodshed Studio (Germany) by V. Santura (Triptykon, Obscura).
