Towers Announces “II” Release Via Eolian Empire

The second LP from Portland’s apocalyptic bass-and-drums duo Towers, aptly titled “II,” will be released next month as part of Eolian Empire’s continuing mission to foist the great unwashed Portland heavy underground on a now suspecting public. The label comments:

“Towers formed in 2010 after the demise of psych-garage act The Troglodytes, and by melding elements of doom, no wave, new wave, industrial, noise rock, and soundscapes into rough-hewn monolithic monstrosities simultaneously disturbing and tantalizing, the twosome has dragged and scraped chunks and shards from all the darkest sonic territories to assemble a heavy monster in its own image. Both primitive and futurist, Towers transcends musical movements, molding Promethean monoliths out of doom, sludge, no wave, new wave, industrial, and psychedelia.

“Recorded in full analog, at the same studio as the Shins and Decemberists, no less, Towers’ second LP II is a Cremaster cycle of droney dirges, rapid-fire blasts, Lynchian soundscapes, and deviant hooks set off by barked orders, snarled decrees and haunting laments. The album starts off with a furnace growl, an ancient machine coming to life as each crooked limb cracks and stirs before being suddenly thrown into gear with a grinding off-kilter bass loop.

“Over thirty-six minutes II purposefully shifts through a procession of primal mutant grooves, oscillating hooks, sludgy crawls, cavernous experimental explorations, and haunting, swinging marches marked by the barked Teutonic invocations -Hell is coming! – and ghostly incantations of the wounded and beaten. II is a huge, enveloping beast of a record that captures the unique crushing intensity of their live sets.”

“II” is due out February 11th on 180-gram wax and digital. The track listing is as follows:

1. Hell
2. The Door at the End of the Hall
3. The Chosen
4. In the Room of Misfortune

CAPA Streaming "Shallow Towers"

Philadelphia based multi-instrumentalist Brandon Scott Baun and his blackgaze band CAPA have recently signed to Visionaire Records to distribute its recent two song EP “Shallow Towers,” which has been out digitally for awhile on Bandcamp. “Shallow Towers” is an EP that bridges both songs together acoustically over a 24 minute period. CAPA utilizes a wide array of instruments that include piano, melodica, glockenspiel, banjo, singing bowl, and didgeridoo.

Each album tells a story through music, artwork, poems, and journal entries that span the band’s discography. Currently, CAPA is working on its third album to complete the trilogy. Brandon also has an acoustic/ambient side project called Where Why’s Wonder and is streaming the song “Cellar Door” over on Soundcloud.

Aathma Streaming New Track "Valley Of Doom"

Spanish doom act Aathma recently released the band’s second album “Decline… Towers of Silence,” and the band has now released a song off the album and posted studio footage online. You can check out the studio clip after the jump, or listen to the song “Valley of Doom” by heading over to the Aathma Facebook profile here. The band also commented on the release:

“It´s a concept album which revolves around the Towers of Silence, funerary structures used by the followers of the prophet Zoroaster. According to their beliefs, human cadavers are impure and should not contaminate the earth. For this reason they are moved to the Towers so that the vultures may devour their flesh and the sun can bleach their bones until they are dust. But the progress spiral in which we currently find ourselves is hopelessly disturbing this civilization, as these ancestral constructions are being absorbed by the big cities.

“The problem is aggravated by the near total extinction of the vultures that formerly carried out that purifying task. And this is, in band´s own opinion, a metaphor for the real fate of human beings: self-destruction.”

“Decline… Towers of silence” was recorded and mixed by Carlos Santos at Sadman Studios in Madrid, while mastering was carried out by Jens Bogren, who has previously worked with bands such as Opeth and Enslaved.
