Split LP Announced By Retortion Terror And Invidiosus

Minnesota death grinders Invidiosus are proud to announce a forthcoming split release with Japanese grind beasts Retortion Terror. The self-titled album will be released October 20th via Horror Pain Gore Death Productions. Check out promo videos for “Cultural Indifference” and “River of Ignorance” from Invidiosus and Retortion Terror, respectively, below.

CD Pre-order: Over Here
Digital pre-order: right here

Horror Pain Gore Death Productions presents this intense split album between Japan’s grinding maniacs Retortion Terror and US Death/Grind destroyers Invidiosus! Retortion Terror makes its HPGD debut with five tracks of raw, blistering grindcore straight from Kyoto, Japan. Featuring legendary guitarist Takafumi Matsubara (Gridlink, Mortalized Grindcore) and a mysterious lineup of international grinders, Retortion Terror pull no punches on this split. In 2014, Takafumi suffered a brain infection that made it nearly impossible for him to play guitar, and many thought Gridlink’s “Longhena” might be Takafumi’s last record.

Fortunately, he has beaten those odds; his recovery has been nothing short of miraculous, and he has resumed playing guitar and doing karate in spite of what the doctors told him. This is Takafumi’s first release since that final Gridlink album, having overcome some impossible odds to return to playing grindcore. His work with Retortion Terror shows that he has no signs of slowing down or stopping anytime soon. This is an absolute must listen for fans of Discordance Axis, Wormrot, Noisear and Insect Warfare.

Invidiosus also makes its Horror Pain Gore Death debut on this devastating split release! Hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Invidiosus perform vicious, anxiety-driven death/grind that is absolutely punishing. Invidiosus features current and former members of Amiensus, Rottenness, Violence Condoned, In Defence and Atrum Inritus. The band has spent the last 3 years relentlessly touring Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Bolivia and the USA, with an upcoming tour of Japan and South Korea (including a festival performance at Asakusa Deathfest). Blending elements of grindcore, death metal and thrash, Invidiosus brings a destructive, eclectic style out in full force for their HPGD premiere! Essential for fans of Cephalic Carnage, Phobia, Pig Destroyer, and Brutal Truth.

“This is Karate. This is Grindcore. If the doctors say bad things, I try spinning back kick” – Takafumi Matsubara

The track listing reads:

Retortion Terror:

5. River Of Ignorance

Invidiosus:

Mayhem To Use Euronymous Hologram On “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas” Tour

In recent years, it’s becoming increasingly (and frighteningly) common for dead musicians to be brought back to the stage using holographic technology, with the likes of Michael Jackson, Tupac Shakur, Elvis Presley and even Ronnie James Dio all being seen by live audiences again. While the use of these projections a great deal of debate and controversy, mostly owing to the ethics of using the likenesses of musicians who died before they could give any consent to such use of their image and the argument that the holograms cheapen both the memories of the musicians and the live experience overall, it is nevertheless becoming a more common sight. It has now been revealed that the latest band to use the technology will be Norwegian black metal legends, Mayhem, who will use it to recreate the image of deceased guitarist Øystein “Euronymous” Aarseth.

Mayhem will be hitting the road this year to perform their classic debut full length, “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas” in full and to mark the occassion, the group has teamed up with Eyellusion, who worked on the Ronnie James Dio hologram to bring back Euronymous and give fans who never got the chance to see him in person the opportunity to do so. No word has been given yet on whether his image will be used for one song or for the whole performance, but it’s sure to be a decision which is divisive among fans.

Aarseth was infamously killed in 1993 at the hands of Burzum mastermind and former bandmate, Varg Vikernes, who performed bass on the “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas” record. He was given the maximum Norwegian prison sentence of 21 years, but released in 2009.

Doomed & Stoned Offering 70 Track Portland Compilation

The blog Doomed & Stoned has put together an extensive compilation of underground heavy bands in Portland, Oregon, which features Ape Machine’s “Angry Man,” Blackwitch Pudding’s “Swamp Gas Of The Nevermizer,” and a whole lot more. The site’s founder, Billy Goat, comments:

“Portland, Oregon is known for many things–it’s the ‘Rose City,’ clustered around the mighty Willamette River and nearby Mt. Hood, the home of Nike and the Trail Blazers, even a major network television show called Portlandia.

“But to the hard working locals, Portland is home two the two big things that really matter: brews and bad-ass rock ‘n’ roll. Doomed & Stoned in Portland is a snapshot of the heavy music scene right now in Portland–from the ever-popular Red Fang, Lord Dying, and Toxic Holocaust, to rising stars such as Sons of Huns, Ape Machine, and Drunk Dad.

“Most of all, here is a collection of bands with a strong DIY ethic–everything from experimental metal to a distinct brand of Northwest punk to the ultra-heavy metal doom giants like Graves at Sea, Usnea, and Stoneburner. Not to mention the bands that just like to “Keep Portland Weird” (Blackwitch Pudding, Pinkzilla, Big Black Cloud). Over 65 bands waiting for you to lend them your ears–and a free download, to boot. Opeth Discusses Recording New Album “Pale Communion”

Opeth will release eleventh studio album “Pale Communion” on June 17th, 2014. The album was produced by band leader Mikael Åkerfeldt and mixed by longtime collaborator and Porcupine Tree frontman/guitarist Steven Wilson.

Opeth frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt was recently interviewed by Ultimate-Guitar.com. The band recorded at Rockfield Studios in the UK, and finished the album in two weeks.

Says Mikael in the interview: “We recorded onto Pro Tools but through the console. They still have tape machines there that are rarely used. I think we could have used tapes. I have recorded many records on tape and even if I love the sounds, it’s so time consuming. We didn’t have time really but we actually recorded much faster than we ever have. It was only 13 days to record this album…That’s very fast for us. When we have recorded onto tape even if we’ve been well-rehearsed, we spend a month or six weeks. Which I didn’t want to do this time. I wanted for it to be fast, spontaneous and fun…I think this new album is still clinging to the ’70s sound, which is a warm, natural sound but the technology was updated and more advanced. So it sounds like ’70s but better in a way. If you know what I mean? I guess that’s what we wanted. I don’t like modern-sounding heavy records. I think many of them sound just not human. You also get tired and your ears get tired listening to new metal records. While some of those records I mentioned still sound fresh and never sounded old.”

He also dismisses discussion of a solo album, saying, “There’s no need for me to do that because I’m really comfortable writing for Opeth. I can put pretty much anything into Opeth and there’s no need for me to create some type of solo project in order to fulfill my dreams as a musician because I put everything into Opeth. I said that a few years ago because I was interested in doing a singer/songwriter record because I loved that so much. Which obviously would need a full band. But it was also something I wanted to do just to see if I could produce a record from scratch on my own in my own studio. It was a bit of an experiment and to be honest not something I yearned for. I had a big mouth and then people thought it was actually gonna happen. ‘When is it coming’ and I was like, ‘Well, it’s talk. Just talk.’ But who knows? If I end up with a bunch of songs like that maybe I’ll put it out.”

The new album’s track listing is as follows:

1. Eternal Rains Will Come
2. Cusp of Eternity
3. Moon Above, Sun Below
4. Elysian Woes
5. Goblin
6. River
7. Voice of Treason
8. Faith in Others

Eight Bells Streaming Full New Album “The Captain’s Duaghter”

In celebration of its forthcoming release this Tuesday, Metal Insider will be streaming Eight Bells’ “The Captain’s Daughter” debut in its entirety for a limited time.

Engineered by sound mastermind Billy Anderson, “The Captain’s Daughter” features four organic soundscapes that merge serenity with severity. Lose yourself with “The Captain’s Daughter” over at this location. The following press release was issued about the band:

“Eight Bells features within its ranks SubArachnoid Space alumni Melynda Jackson and Christopher Van Huffel. A native of rural Texas now based in Portland, Oregon, Jackson’s Eight Bells continues in SAS’ tradition of heavy guitar exploration, adding a blackened dissonance to the mix and minimalist vocals. Jackson is accompanied by classically trained six-string bassist Haley Westeiner who created the centerpiece vocals on ‘Fate and Technology’ and also provides harmonic counterpoint to Jackson’s newly discovered vocalizations.

“Van Huffel resumes the throne he occupied for ten years, bringing his thunderous, nuanced double kick playing with him. With this power trio, Jackson has found a group that brings focus and support to her unapologetically expressionistic experimental metal music.”

“The Captain’s Daughter” will be released via Seventh Rule Recordings February 19th, 2013. Order your copy right here.
