“The Mirror Black” (Featuring Rob Miller)

The pre-order for this digital release starts next week, December 7th, 2018.

At The Gates vocalist Tomas Lindberg checked in with the following comment about the 7” EP release: “The idea of getting guest vocalists on board for the bonus tracks for the album was us trying something new again…This time we wanted to get other artists involved in our music, getting their takes on our new songs. It was a pleasure working with everybody and all songs grew immensely in the process. The songs we did with Rob Miller was for me personally something extra. Of course, people who know me, know that I am a massive Amebix fan. And I love the more recent stuff with Tau Cross too. I had no idea what to expect. But the songs grew so goddamn much together with Rob‘s powerful voice. We decided early on that these versions were worthy of their own release. This is for me personally one of the greatest achievements of my career, to share the vocal space with one of my favourite vocalists of all time. I am so proud of this release. Hope everyone else gets as much joy out of it as I do.”

Metal Underground caught up with At The Gates guitarist Martin Larsson at this year’s Bloodstock Open Air festival, in which the musician hinted that new music could come sooner than people expect.

Hatebreed Announces 25th Anniversary Tour With Obituary, Cro-Mags, Terror And Fit For An Autopsy

Hatebreed remain one of the most relevant and impactful acts in the hard rock and metal scenes. The Connecticut band will celebrate 25 years of ruthless breakdowns, pit-stirring anthems, and poignant lyrics across eight albums and consistently sold-out shows in 2019. The band, which has gone from playing basements and backyards to being a featured worldwide attraction on countless festivals and high-profile tours from OZZFest to Warped Tour to Download, will commemorate two-plus decades by embarking on a 25th anniversary tour.

The first leg of the tour will feature support from Obituary and Cro-Mags, two bands that Hatebreed have covered in their career and who have influenced the signature and instantly recognizable Hatebreed sound. Terror and Fit for an Autopsy will round out this “can’t miss” juggernaut of a lineup. The initial trek will kick off in Philadelphia in April, with an additional leg to be announced shortly. All confirmed dates are below.

“I can’t believe it’s been 25 years already,” said Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta. “We’re excited to bring out this massive tour package with some of our favorite bands. Every band on this bill is a headliner in their own right. The show will be run festival-style with bands you don’t want to miss playing early. Activate the pit!”

“Looking forward to this one – 25 years of Hatebreed, celebrated with not only friends, but a couple bands who influenced us so much that we covered their songs on For the Lions. Come celebrate the entire catalog with us!,” said Hatebreed guitarist Frank Novinec.

“All killer, no filler here,” said Hatebreed drummer Matt Byrne. “This April will be a sick tour for Hatebreed. Celebrating 25 years is a big accomplishment for any band. But it’s that much sweeter when you’re doing it with some of your favorite bands in tow. We love Obituary so much that we covered them on our For the Lions record. We love Cro-Mags so much that we covered them on our For the Lions record. We love Terror and Fit For An Autopsy so much that… 😉 See you all in April!”

“We are excited to be invited to Hatebreed’s 25th anniversary US tour and super honored to be a part such an awesome lineup,” stated Obituary drummer Donald Tardy. “Looking forward to throwing down each night with them and bringing some of our southern swamp metal to this tour. Gonna be sick!”

“Hatebreed’s 25th anniversary tour is gonna be a banger – the Cro-Mags are psyched as f*ck to be part of it,” proclaimed frontman John Joseph.

“The lineup for this tour is insane,” said Terror frontman Scott Vogel, echoing all of those sentiments. “We are very much looking forward to being on this run with some of our favorite bands.”

The tour dates are as follows:

March 7 – San Diego, CA – House of Blues*
April 4 – Philadelphia, PA – Franklin Music Hall**
April 5 – Worcester, MA – The Palladium
April 6 – Clifton Park, NY – Upstate Concert Hall

Children Of Bodom Reveals New Album “Hexed” Details

Finland’s melodic death superstars Children Of Bodom are proud to the announce the release of their tenth album, Hexed, on March 8th 2019 via Nuclear Blast Records.

COB frontman, guitarist, and mastermind Alexi Laiho comments, “People have said that this album is generally catchier. So I started thinking about that, perhaps the song structures are easier to grasp on initial listen. But there’s some crazy shit in there, almost progressive or at least technical. There are certain melodies across the album that could have come from jazz songs, although they’re completely metal with us, of course (laughs).”

“For me, it has always been very hard to describe our new music,” comments bassist Henkka Blacksmith. “In a way it always feels familiar, but the new stuff also always surprises me. Here we have something that’s very Bodom, but somehow we haven’t done this kind of stuff, possibly ever. Then again, someone said that there’s a somewhat similar vibe to what Follow the Reaper had. I don’t know. Anyway, we had a really hard time choosing the songs for the videos, I guess that’s a positive problem to have.”

“Hexed” saw the return to Finland’s Danger Johnny Studios where COB were reunited with Mikko Karmila (“I Worship Chaos,” “Halo Of Blood,” “Hatebreeder,” “Follow the Reaper” and “Hate Crew Deathroll”) who recorded everything except keyboards and also produced the album with the band. Janne Wirman recorded keyboards at Beyond Abilities Studios. The album was mixed and mastered at Finnvox Studios in Helsinki, Finland.

For this album, the band enlisted Deins Forkas to create the album artwork. Bassist Henkka Blacksmith commented on the cover, “For some years I’ve wanted to try a different approach with our cover art. We are so used to digital art, so it’s really hard to do something else. Doing it completely with a computer is somewhat safe and convenient. This time we all agreed to try going old school. We found this cool dude and gave him simple instructions – the cover has to be purple and the reaper has to be central. Half a year later we got his work, and with little tweaking, we now have the cover of Hexed. It is very different from what we are used to, even the Reaper looks different, but at the same time very spooky.”

Hexed will be available for pre-order starting December 7th.

Below is the track listing for “Hexed”

1. The Road
2. Under Grass and Clover
3. Glass Houses
4. Hecate’s Nightmare
5. Kick in the Spleen
6. Platitudes and Barren Words
7. Hexed
8. Relapse (The Nature of My Crime)
9. Say Never Look Back
10. Soon Departed
11. Knuckleduster
12. I Worship Chaos (live)
13. Morrigan (live)
14. Knuckleduster (remix)

Stay tuned for more information about the album as well as announcements about their upcoming US tour in the spring and European trek in the summer!

Flotsam And Jetsam Posts New Music Video “Demolition Man” Online

American thrash metal veterans Flotsam And Jetsam has posted a new music video online for the song, “Demolition Man.” You can check it out below. The song comes from the band’s forthcoming new album, “The End Of Chaos,” which is scheduled to be released on January 18th through AFM Records.

This is the fourteenth album in their more than 30-year history. “This album kills! It’s all five guys with the gas pedal pushed to the floor for the entire album!” states Ken Mary.

“It was cool to have a new element of influence on this album with having Ken’s drum parts to partner with and play in and around his playing that also do with the guitars and vocals. Glad to have had Jacob Hansen bringing this album to the overall sound and energy it has, Jacob really highlights AK’s vocal melodies, as well as Steve and Michael’s songwriting, while the power of the rhythm section drives the songs.” – Michael Spencer

Amon Amarth launches ‘The Pursuit Of Vikings: 25 Years In The Eye Of The Storm’ worldwide!

– November 16th, 2018 –

Mini episode documentary clips from new documentary and live album(s), ‘The Pursuit Of Vikings: 25 Years In The Eye Of The Storm’

Amon Amarth has released their new documentary and supporting live album(s), The Pursuit Of Vikings: 25 Years In The Eye Of The Storm – which includes a retrospective documentary that features a wealth of live and behind-the-scenes content and extensive band interviews. This film tells the Swedish quintet’s history, through both their own eyes and those of the fans that have supported them along the way. It is a thrilling collection that pays respect to the faithful, as well as making for a detailed and riveting introduction for those new to their inspiring story. Paired with this documentary is the live video/audio, which contains two different sets at 2017′s Summer Breeze Festival in Dinkelsbuhl, Germany, capturing the unit at their very best.

Having played the German festival numerous times over the years, and loving the family vibe they have always experienced there, Amon Amarth leapt at the chance to appear twice in the same year. Playing a secret, smaller scale set that focused primarily on older material, and then headlining the main stage with full production – including their giant sea serpent and lots of fire – allowed them to showcase their songs at their best – though putting together setlists from such a mighty catalogue was not the easiest of tasks. “For the first night, we wanted to write a set that the fans would enjoy by wholly diving into our back catalog but also keeping it interesting,” explains guitarist Olavi Mikkonen. “But putting the two shows together also made us realize that we have a lot of songs to choose from!”

For the band, producer Alexander Milas (who contributed to Kerrang! and was an award-winning editor-in-chief of Metal Hammer, before starting his own creative solutions company, Twin V Ltd.) and director Phil Wallis, The Pursuit Of Vikings has been a true labor of love. “I think I first became conscious of Amon Amarth around the release of 2002′s ‘Versus the World‘,” Milas states. “It was a really transitional time for metal, and it seemed there wasn’t a credible band on the heavier end of the scale that hadn’t in some way responded to or been influenced by the pioneering sounds of the Swedish death metal scene, but I distinctly remember thinking that there was something unique about these guys: the artwork, the thematic underpinnings, even that curiously timeless logo.” While their sound certainly displays strong echoes of the nation that birthed them, Amon Amarth arguably wield a unique aura, a “lusciously crafted escapism” that Milas likens to the classic bands he grew up with: Dio, Iron Maiden, and others who exist on a spectrum of their own making.

For a preview of The Pursuit Of Vikings, a new clip from the documentary (plus previously released live videos) can be viewed now at: amonamarth.lnk.to/pursuitofvikings – where the DVD/live album can also be pre-ordered in the following formats via Metal Blade Records in the USA:

Spirits Of Fire Featuring Ripper Owens To Release Debut Album In February, Posts New Video Online

Frontiers Music Srl is known for building new bands/projects featuring musicians of outstanding quality and who come from unique backgrounds. After an intense brainstorming session, a dream team of renowned metal musicians including Tim “Ripper” Owens (ex-Judas Priest, Iced Earth), Chris Caffery (Savatage, Trans-Siberian Orchestra), Steve DiGiorgio (Testament, Death, etc.) and Mark Zonder (ex-Fates Warning, Warlord) was born and put together under the direction of renowned LA-based producer Roy Z. (Bruce Dickinson, Halford, Tribe Of Gypsies).

Called Spirits Of Fire (after the title of one of their songs), the band has completed work on their debut album which is set for release on February 22nd via Frontiers Music Srl. The music can best be described as “classic Priest meets Savatage”. Today, Spirits Of Fire release their first video and single, “Light Speed Marching”. Find the video below.

The album will be available on CD, Red Color Vinyl, Standard Black Vinyl, Collector’s Box (CD + T-Shirt, Size L), and Digital formats. Pre-order “Spirits Of Fire” on CD/LP/Digital and stream the singles here.

North American fans can get limited edition, exclusive red color vinyl & collector’s box (feat. CD + T-Shirt – Size L only) here. These are very limited and this is the only retailer in North America carrying these items. European fan can get the same items here.

Guitarist Chris Caffery on his influences for the record and working with Roy Z: “My influences for writing on this record were the bands that we were and are still in! I wanted to write songs that [Judas] Priest, Savatage, Testament, and Fates Warning fans would like. But, I wanted them to have a personality of their own as well. To give it a vibe that was Spirits Of Fire! I grew up listening to Judas Priest and spent 30 plus years working with Jon Oliva and Paul O’Neill with Savatage and TSO. Many years playing Criss’ music. These influences for me came naturally! Especially because I’m a fan of all of our bands!

“This was the first time that I ever worked with Roy and it was so much fun. I have been a huge fan of his work for a long time. He’s written music, played on, and produced some of my favorite metal albums ever. He had a difficult job bringing this all together and I can’t think of anyone that would have been a better producer and co-worker for this album!”

“I always just sing to the song, whatever I feel it should be. It’s like a character thing! I like layers! This music is really perfect for me and in my natural wheel house. I like to sing all over the place and change it up and this all happens on this album. This is just the start of an amazing band, I mean sky is the limit and I actually can’t wait to record the next album, because this one is so great and perfect,” says vocalist Tim “Ripper” Owens.

Drummer Mark Zonder adds about his playing and writing process, “I am the kind of player that plays what I think fits best with the music. With Spirits Of Fire, the music was more aggressive and hard hitting which I really liked. Again, I tried to be very mindful of the song and the vocals, but tried to add parts that were interesting and creative for the listener.”
