Soulfly plays Nailbomb’s “Point Blank” at Tampa Show on 11/01/2017

Those who follow closely the career of Brazilian Metal icon, Max Cavalera, know that Nailbomb’s “Point Blank” (his album collaboration with Fudge Tunnel’s Alex Newport) probably is one of the most in-your-face recordings the legendary musician has ever produced. That’s why Soulfly’s current American tour is so historically-poignant. The Cavalera’s fronted band is playing the aforementioned 1994 classic album in its entirety. Of course, this is a reason to rejoice.

Soulfly—along with fellow openers Lody Kong and Harm’s Way—visited one of Tampa Bay’s premier music venues, The Orpheum, on November 1. They played “Point Blank” from start to finish, castigating the audience with classic Nailbomb fare like the rabid “Wasting Away,” “24 Hour Bullshit”, “Vai Toma No Cú” and “Cockroaches,” among many others.

Even if the crowd was modest in numbers—let’s remember that it happened on a week day, just after Halloween—the response of those present was tremendously energetic. Cavalera commanded the show with his down-to-earth-yet-larger-than-life stage persona. Song after song, he and his band kept everyone on edge, chanting, moshing, singing along and living the mayhem. No doubt, this Brazilian icon and his comrades still are at the top of their musical powers.

During that night at the Orpheum, Soulfly managed to perfectly channel “Point Blank’s” sonic panache. They delivered the most punishing Metal performances witnessed by a Tampa Bay audience this year. If Soulfly visits your town during the remaining dates of this tour, make sure to go and see it. You will be blown away—Nailbomb style.

The Dillinger Escape Plan Announces Final NYC Shows

Back in August of 2016, The Dillinger Escape Plan announced a planned breakup following the release of the “Disassociation” album and a bout of final U.S. touring. Although the band walked back that breakup talk and has been active for the full year since then, this week a trio of NYC shows have been revealed that are billed as Dillinger’s final performances.

Originally just one show, two more were added when each subsequent show sold out immediately. It’s unclear if any additional appearances will be announced, but it seems like a distinct possibility if this one sells out as well. Details on the remaining DEP shows can be found at the band’s Facebook profile here.

Shining Show In Phoenix, AZ Cancelled

After front man Niklas Kvarforth’s aggressive on and off stage behavior got a show in Portland cancelled, now the upcoming May 21st show in Phoenix has been nixed as well, with the promoter commenting:

“The show is officially cancelled. I tried to make this event happen but Metalsuck.com is turning people away as well as other publications. Not to mention the people that witnessed the event in question posting everywhere about it.”

It’s unclear at this point the fate of the remaining tour dates with Revenge and Wolvhammer, which were slated as follows:

May 17 Portland, OR @ Tonic Lounge (Cancelled)
May 18 Oakland, CA @ Metro Opera House
May 19 Las Vegas, NV @ Adrenaline
May 20 Los Angeles, CA @ Complex
May 21 Phoenix, AZ @ Joe’s Grotto (Cancelled)

Dark Sermon Calling It Quits

Johnny Crowder from Dark Sermon just issued the following statement about the band deciding to call it quits:

“Hey all, J here. My eyes are flooding as I type this, but you deserve to hear it. Dark Sermon has been my life’s work for nearly a decade – an unforgettable whirlwind of sweat, flat tires, and insane tours. In my head, DS would live on forever, but life rarely follows the imaginary paths we paint for it.

“At this point, we have fulfilled our contracts with eOne and Nuclear Blast. This, coupled with a rather unforgiving season of rotten luck, led several members to retire from touring altogether. While I was stubbornly determined to press on, the remaining members decided that now would be a good time to let DS rest.

“Initially, I couldn’t accept it, but now I understand. Since high school, we’ve barely had a moment to tend to anything outside of the band. Looking back, I see how undying dedication to one solitary thing can lead to imbalance.

“Is Dark Sermon done? Unfortunately, that is not up to me. However, I can’t just stop writing music and sharing it with the world. This is why I created my new band, Prison. You can watch our new music video or pre-order our new record if you’d like to support us.

“Although I am still trying to make peace with this situation, Dark Sermon brought immeasurable healing to me and countless others. And for that, I will never, ever forget it – or you. To everyone who has followed my personal journey with mental illness, faith, and sobriety, thank you. Whether you decide to accompany me in this new chapter or not, you’ve already given me more than I could ask for. You saved my life.

“I love each and every one of you. Deeply. Goodbye for now.”

Ivan Moody Drops Off Five Finger Death Punch Tour, Replaced By Phil Labonte

With only seven shows to go on the band’s current U.S. co-headlining arena tour alongside Shinedown, Five Finger Death Punch will finish out the current trek with All That Remains vocalist Phil Labonte filling in for frontman Ivan Moody, who has fallen ill.

Says Zoltan Bathory, guitarist of Five Finger Death Punch: “Ivan is our brother and we fully and wholeheartedly support him taking care of himself so he can get well as soon as possible. We discussed possibly canceling the remaining shows but the responses from the other bands on the tour were so overwhelmingly supportive that we decided to move forward and deliver the great night to the fans that they expect.”

Phil Labonte comments: “I got their six and stepped up right away. I’m honored to be able to help Five Finger Death Punch to finish their tour and give Ivan a chance to take care of himself. I did the same for Killswitch Engage years ago. I was humbled to get the call and get a chance to play in front of such a great audience.”

Adds James Michael, vocalist for Sixx:A.M.: “All of our hearts are with Ivan right now hoping for a speedy recovery. Phil is an excellent frontman and vocalist who stepped forward in solidarity to Ivan without a moment of hesitation. Fans are in for some special treats and surprises. I’m really excited about the show tonight.”

The remaining dates of the tour are as follows:

Fri – 12/2 – Hershey, PA Giant Center
Sat – 12/3 – Huntington, WV Big Sandy Superstore Arena
Mon – 12/5 – Greenville, SC Bon Secours Wellness Arena

Soilwork Comments On Losing Dirk Verbeuren To Megadeth

Yesterday it was announced that longtime Soilwork drummer Dirk Verbeuren had departed the group to join Megadeth on a permanent basis after performing live with the band since May.

Soilwork vocalist Bjorn “Speed” Strid offers up his encouragement:

“In regards to the statement Megadeth released yesterday, confirming that Dirk will join them as their full time drummer, I just want to take the time to wish Dirk good luck on this new venture and thank him for 12 great years together. Together we have created a beast of a band and have pushed the limits musically further than we ever could have imagined.”

Strid further states Soilwork is charging forward: “In the recent years Soilwork have found new ways of expressing ourselves and as much as of a cliché it is, I strongly believe that this is very much of a new era for us and that we still have so much left to say, whether it being with or without Dirk. This band has grown to be quite a metal collective and an institution that paves the way creatively and we hope that you, the fans, can feel the presence and the heart in our music still to this day. Believe me, it’s there.

“I can assure that you will forever get 100% Soilwork, as long as we release albums. We aim to surprise ourselves and the listeners by constantly developing our sound and songwriting, something I believe we have succeeded in doing and yet remained true to our roots. That is something to be proud of and we are. We appreciate all our loyal fans and are excited that so many of you share our musical vision.

“Meanwhile, I’m sure many of you have seen us at a festival in Europe this summer with our friend, Bastian Thusgaard filling in on drums and I’m sure we can all agree on what a monster he is. Thank you Bastian, you are absolutely killing it. Check out the remaining festival dates and come see us. We’ll be there. Thank you.”

Monuments Drops Off The Contortionist Tour

Monuments has been out on tour (without vocalist Chris Barretto) in North America alongside The Contortionist. Unfortunately Monuments is now dropping off the tour early, with the band commenting:

“Friends, We must regrettably inform you that Baltimore will be the last show for us on tour with The Contortionist, Entheos and sleepmakeswaves. We’ve tried everything in our power to continue to the end of the tour, but financially, we just can’t make it happen.

“A huge apology to those of you who were coming to see us at one of the remaining shows, but PLEASE go along and see the tour, buy some merchandise and support live music.

“Thanks to everyone who checked out the instrumental set on this tour. We had a blast. Maximum love to Contorts, Entheos, sleepmakeswaves and all crew for understanding. Yall rule.”

Lamb Of God Drops Off Tour Due To Terror Concerns, Children Of Bodom To Continue On

After the ISIS-led terrorist attacks in Paris last week, Lamb Of God has decided to drop off all remaining European tour dates with Children Of Bodom and Sylosis. The band comments:

“Due to concerns brought to our attention by the venue security team yesterday in Tilburg – and continued general concerns across Europe – we have decided against putting our fans, our crew and ourselves in this position night after night and will be canceling the remainder of our performances in Europe. This is a decision we are making on behalf of the fans, our crew, and our band, as well as the well-being of everyone’s family, friends and loved ones at home. Stay safe, and we will see you very soon.”

The tour will continue without Lamb Of God, however, with Children Of Bodom commenting: “Lamb of God has chosen to leave the European tour due to security concerns in Europe. Our team has been working very hard to make all of the remaining shows happen. WE WANT TO, AND HAVE DECIDED TO, CONTINUE ON THE ROAD AND PLAY THE REST OF THE TOUR. Sylosis also will be joining us on their scheduled appearances.

“Here is what we know so far. Unfortunately the promoter has decided to move forward and cancel tonight’s show in Oberhausen, Germany, and the additional shows in Germany. At this time, the remaining schedule will move forward as this (we ARE looking to add more shows FYI). We WILL keep you updated as we have changes, and we are doing our best to keep you informed as quickly as possible on everything.”
