You can’t talk about the true greats of folk-inspired melodic death metal without reverent mention of Ensiferum, and with their latest album, Two Paths, they once more affirm their place in the pantheons of the genre. Further building upon the thrilling metallic hybrid honed across six full-lengths, Two Paths is simultaneously the Finnish quintet’s most epic and far-reaching collection and their most organic, which definitely sets it apart from the pack. Additionally, the album literally takes the concept of Two Paths to heart, with two different versions of standout tracks “Don’t You Say” and “God Is Dead”. “Even though Ensiferum has always had clean vocals and choirs, harsh vocals have been the main style, and those songs worked so well with both styles that we decided to include both versions,” explains bassist/vocalist Sami Hinkka. With Mikko P. Mustonen again handling orchestral arrangements and Lassi Logren returning to play nyckelharpa and violin on a few songs, Hinkka is also more than happy that they brought “more bombastic orchestral and down to earth folk aspects” to the record, further fleshing out their vision. This also applies to the contribution of Gyula Havancsak, who provided the artwork for both Two Paths and its predecessor, One Man Army. “It was really nice to work with him again because he always wants to hear our ideas and then he adds his own magic and improvements to them, and the result is always astonishing.”

Samael Posts New Video, “Rite Of Renewal” Online

Swiss extreme metal legends Samael (whose frontman Vorph was recently interviewed here,) has posted a new video online for the song, “Rite Of Renewal.” Speaking about the video, the band stated:

“This is the first song from ‘Hegemony’ that we presented live and it became an instant classic. The video was shot in Les Docks in Lausanne during the first show that followed the release of ‘Hegemony,’ it was latter edited by Sergey Ulyanov who previously worked on other visuals for us. The song itself is a mid/up tempo track that shows a more technical side of our music. The dynamic is kept by altering fast and dense parts with open and heavy ones until the grand final with super heavy riffs and apocalyptic keyboard parts. What better title for a song than ‘Rite of Renewal’ to start a new year? 2018 here we go!”

Mumakil Calls It Quits After A Long Period of Inactivity

After a long stint of inactivity, Swiss grindcore band Mumakil has started off the new year by announcing their disbandment:

Hello there. Wish we could start the year with better news but unfortunately it is time to announce that the beast is no more. MUMAKIL IS DEAD. Let’s just say that the momentum is long gone. We have all moved on to new horizons. Thank you for showing up over all those years, thank you for the support, the headbangs and of course the hangovers! You are family. Grind on.

While promising new music in 2016, the band’s last release was “Flies Will Starve,” issued by Relapse Records back in 2013.

Steamhammer/SPV Records Inks Deal With The Rods

The new year is off to an awesome start, as Steamhammer/SPV has signed legendary metal band The Rods for the world. The group consisting of the original members David “Rock” Feinstein (guitar, vocals), Carl Canedy (drums) and Garry Bordonaro (bass) always delivered a classic brand of metal and hard rock with strong influences that date back to 1970s.

Drummer Carl Canedy says: “The 3rd time’s a charm! After two unsuccessful attempts, to work with Olly Hahn and Steamhammer/SPV, it is finally happening. The Rods have signed a worldwide deal for the brand new album ‘Louder Than Loud.’ This album, in my opinion, has some of the strongest Rods material in years. The title says it all!”

Olly Hahn, A&R and International Product Manager at Steamhammer/SPV, is thrilled : “I remember when I saw an ad for the album ‘Wild Dogs’ in a German magazine back in 1982. I immediately had to have the album although I had no idea what I can expect musicwise. The cover was so awesome and when I put the album on my turntable I was blown away. Now 35 years later it’s fantastic to say the following sentence: We’re proud and happy to welcome The Rods to our big Steamhammer family!”

The Rods are a classic heavy metal trio that rocked through the 80’s with classic albums like “The Rods,” “Wild Dogs” and “In The Raw” with a powerful, raw energy that led the band on tours with some of today’s greatest metal bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Metallica, to name just a few.

The new album “Louder Than Loud” will be released later in 2017 followed by many live shows and festivals…..stay tuned for more information coming within the next weeks.

Wulfhook Parts With Vocalist Jeff Schlinz

Wulfhook just issued the following announcement online about parting ways with vocalist Jeff Schlinz:

“Happy new year everyone. We’ve been quiet for a minute and unfortunately our first news of 2017 will be a bummer. Jeff Schlinz has decided to part ways with Wulfhook. We will not go into detail as to why. If he’d like to address it he can but please respect his privacy otherwise. We wish him the absolute best with his future endevours and pursuits beyond the band. He will always be our brother and he will be missed.

“That being said, we are looking for a new singer. Anyone interested in trying out can message the band or any of the members directly. We absolutely do not expect anyone to sound like a Jeff Schlinz clone, he was a freak of nature vocally (we are very aware). The best thing you can do is be yourself, bring your own voice and attitude to the table.

“We are looking for someone who is motivated and hard working. We have a lot of plans toward the future and you’ll be hearing much more from us in the weeks and months to come. In the meantime here is the last recording we did with Sling and the only recorded material currently featuring Mike and Chris. We thank you all for your continued support of Wulfhook!”
