Cormorant Reveals “Diaspora” Album Cover

“Diaspora” is the impending new full-length album from progressive black/death practitioners Cormorant. Slated to drop this August 11th, the consuming follow-up to 2014’s “Earth Diver” sees Cormorant take progressive metal in expansive and exploratory new directions.

Recorded and mixed by Greg Wilkinson (Vastum, Graves At Sea, Noothgrush, Brainoil) at Earhammer Studios in Oakland, California, the sixty-one-minute offering features the band’s longest, most detail-oriented compositions to date.

“Diaspora” also features performances from renowned cellist Jackie Perez Gratz (Grayceon, Giant Squid, ex-Amber Asylum) and was mastered by Brad Boatright (Sleep, YOB, Gatecreeper). Additionally, Utah-based visionary artist Jeff Christensen created the album’s vivid and stunning four-panel artwork, revealed for the first time today.

Issues Christensen, “The idea was to create four panels of artwork based on a migration theme. I thought it would be interesting to have the panels run consecutively to form an expansive, evolving image where the eyes can just roam. We wanted each painting to be able to hold its own as a standalone image but also be a link to the wider image of the migratory theme. The original artwork was done with oil paints on four 16″ x 16″ panels. The entire process was a challenge, and the finished images are really different than anything I’ve done before. I was given a lot of reign to just do my thing and I’m very happy with the way it turned out.”

The Cold Stares Posts “Head Bent” Title Track

“Head Bent” is the forthcoming new full-length album from Nashville duo The Cold Stares. Set for release June 16th via Small Stone Recordings, the eleven-track “Head Bent” was produced and mixed by the band with Greg Pearce and mastered by Chris Goosman.

In advance of its release, today the record’s title track comes online and can be heard below. Notes frontman Chris Tapp, “I was listening to a bit of Queen and always loved ‘Tie Your Mother Down,’ so I started writing with that in mind. The music just sounds like bikes to me. I’ve always had hot rods and bikes and wanted to do a tribute song to all the good people in those communities.

“A big part of my cancer recovery was getting my mind right, and just riding; there’s nothing like the focus and peace it brings. The bike and gear head community is so much about family and respect, and just love for the machine. ‘Head Bent’ is that feeling of 80mph wind twisting your neck down the highway.”

Ty Arthur Releasing New Grimdark Novel “Light Dawning”

Following his debut sci-fi novella “Empty” from 2016, heavy metal scribe Ty Arthur (Metalunderground.com’s very own xFiruath) returns with new full-length horror novel “Light Dawning.” Pivoting away from the emptiness of space, the book dives headlong into the waters of fantasy, but with a seriously grimdark twist. This next foray into the bleaker corners of human existence is officially slated for release on Friday, May 26th, 2017.

Like its predecessor, the creation of “Light Dawning” was driven forward by the power of music, with special thanks in particular due to U.K. avant-garde black metal group Code, Norwegian musical enigma Ihsahn, and Chilean prog rock group Bauda. To get an advance preview of the themes and tone of the novel, a music playlist matching several scenes can be heard via Spotify here or in the player below.

Once known as the City on the Hill and revered far and wide for its independence and boundless opportunity, Cestia has become home only to the damned. Surviving under the brutal occupation of a southern empire for three long years, the oppressed populace has lost hope of liberation, turning instead towards an increasingly desperate rebellion willing to commit any atrocity for a chance at freedom.

As total war approaches, four lost souls trapped behind Cestia’s walls are on a collision course with fate, destined to either save the city or see it utterly destroyed while calling on forces beyond mankind’s comprehension. For good or ill, the light of a new day is about to dawn.

“As with all my work, this story is inspired by a real life experience translated into a fictional setting, and completing this book took a lot out of me,” Arthur said of the upcoming release. “Its set in an unquestionably fantasy universe, but don’t expect any elves or farm boy chosen ones saving the world. My take on the genre draws more from cosmic dread and the horror of war than anything with unlikely heroes or lovable rogues. Don’t expect any happy endings.”
