Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals Recruits Former Cattle Decapitation Bassist Derek Engemann

Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals are pleased to welcome former Cattle Decapitation bassist/current Scour guitarist Derek Engemann to the lineup.

Engemann – who takes the place of bass comrade Walter Howard (Grieved, Oppressive Force, Vaginal Bear Trap etc.) – will make his live debut with The Illegals beginning next week on the band’s Latin American tour where they’ll be performing Illegals tracks alongside a selection of Pantera hits.

Comments Anselmo of the new addition, “Derek is a brother; he’s solid, driven, and talented. It’s awesome to have him onboard and I look forward to jamming and writing with him. We’re lucky to have him.”

Adds Engemann, “I’m very excited to share the stage with mi hermanos in The Illegals! It’s also truly an honour to pay such a great tribute to Dime and Vinnie!”

In March, the band will make their way to Australia and New Zealand on the Thrash Blast Grind tour with Australian grind practitioners and Housecore Records labelmates King Parrot. The journey marks Anselmo’s first visit to Australia in over five years and includes a headlining set at Slayfest in Perth March 23rd. Additional support will be provided by Palm (Japan) and Potion (Australia).

The summer months will find Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals playing a host of European festivals including Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium, Hellfest in France, and Metaldays in Slovenia, with more performances to be announced in the weeks to come.

Mike Portnoy, formerly of Dream Theater and more recently a member of such bands as The Winery Dogs, Metal Allegiance and The Neal Morse Band among others, has announced via a post on Facebook that Sons Of Apollo, the progressive metal supergroup featuring Portnoy, Billy Sheehan of Mr. Big, former Dream Theater keyboardist Derek Sherinian, vocalist Jeff Scott Soto (Trans Siberian Orchestra/ex Journey) and ex Guns N Roses guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, has been working on a new album. The post reads as follows:

“What an intense writing session we’ve had for Sons Of Apollo 2 over the last week!! It was a whirlwind of creativity and we managed to pull it all together and knock it out of the park (IMHO)…and wasting no time, I’m flying to LA today to begin recording my drum tracks!
We will then spend the rest of the year crafting the album and are shooting to have it out at the end of the year or beginning of 2020…”But worry not, there’s the Live Plovdiv Release coming early this summer to tide you over until then!”

– December 12th, 2018 –

Epic Melodic Death Metallers Nothgard have just finished their live activities for 2018. Bandleader Dom R. Crey comments: “Wow, what a blast! Four weeks, countless shows all over Europe and an incredibly awesome time. At the end of October, we started with the guys of Parasite Inc. in the ‘Malady X‘ release-tour, and would like to thank all those who came to the shows. The energy that our fans put up here was fantastic. We had never expected that lyrics of the new songs would be shouted at us during those shows – incredible! Just as great was the subsequent European tour with our Finnish brothers in mind, Omnium Gatherum & Wolfheart. Again, a big thank you to all our fans in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Spain, Hungary and Co – you know who you are!”

Nothgard filmed an abundance of material during their latest tour; the band has now launched a video for the Malady X track, “Guardians Of Sanity”, which can be viewed at: youtu.be/oeOGTz3dmvc

Camera and editing was handled by Wolfheart mastermind Tuomas Saukkonen, who is also producing the clips for his own band. If you couldn’t come to the shows you now have the chance to get a glimpse of our live performance to headbang through your house!”

Monte Pittman will be touring in support of his two new solo albums: Better Or Worse and Between The Space. Monte comments:
“The album ‘Between The Space‘ is a heavy album that gets straight to the point as soon as it starts. The theme is about connection, alignment, and what divides those things. As always when I write, my goal is coming up with the material that fits in my live show. I did everything on these albums. I wrote it all, I played every instrument, I recorded it, and I mixed it. The only thing I didn’t do was the artwork (by Aaron Lea) and mastering (by Alan Douches). It was a challenge having so many tasks. It was a luxury being able to take the time and get everything just how I wanted it. It was a learning experience, and it was a lot of fun making it.

The album ‘Better Or Worse‘ is an acoustic album but it feels like a heavy album. The theme is about being attached to something or being unattached. It could be an idea or a thought process. The softest part of the album has the heaviest lyrics. It builds instrumentally as the album progresses. I wanted the tone of each track to be a little different from each other. ‘Better Or Worse‘ and ‘Between The Space‘ both mirror each other and they are polar opposites. The idea is to have something there for the people who like my heavy music, something for the people who like my acoustic music, and something for the people who like the variety of both.”

Hamferð releases live video of “Evst”

– December 4th, 2018 –

Set to play live shows in Scandinavia this week

Faroese doomsters Hamferð have released a live video recording of “Evst”, the title track off the band’s 2013 debut LP. The song was performed at the release show for their latest album, Támsins likam, on March 17th, 2018 at the old Sjonleikarahusið theater in Torshavn, Faroe Islands. Watch the video now at: youtu.be/T-XPLG40vSA

Hamferð previously released the live recorded video of “Stygd” from the same concert, the second track off Támsins likam, released on Metal Blade earlier this year. See it here: youtu.be/pLtwVGB7f60

Singer Jon Aldara comments: “This concert was a meticulous production in regards to performance, sound and lighting, and we felt it was the perfect opportunity to record it properly. It’s a great feeling to have a live recording of Hamferð that does not come from an iPhone or from a festival production that we had little to no control over. We took everything in our own hands and went the whole nine yards with a brilliant crew and all the high-end equipment we could get our hands on. Luckily, I really think it shows!”

Hamferð will head out on a tour of Scandinavia this week, notably playing Sweden for the first time in their 10-year long career. See below for all dates!

Hamferð tour dates
w/ Svartmalm

Dec. 5 – Kobenhavn, Denmark – Beta 2300
Dec. 6 – Odense, Denmark – Posten
Dec. 7 – Goteborg, Sweden – Sticky Fingers w/ October Tide
Dec. 8 – Oslo, Norway – Revolver
Dec. 9 – Trondheim, Norway – Hjorten Scene

Támsins likam was released in January via Metal Blade Records! To preview and purchase the album, please visit: metalblade.com/hamferd

Ex-Machine Head Guitarist Phil Demmel Comments On Filling In For Gary Holt In Slayer

Ex-Machine Head guitarist Phil Demmel comments on being tapped to fill-in for Gary Holt on the remainder of Slayer‘s current European leg of their farewell tour. Gary Holt announced that he was heading home early to be with his dying father.

Demmel made his live debut with Slayer yesterday (Monday, December 3) at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark. Fan-filmed live footage of the band performing “Hell Awaits” can be seen below:

Comments Phil Demmel on filling in for Gary Holt in Slayer via Instagram:

“Full circle. Karma. It’s so crazy how things work out. I got a text less than 24 hours after I played my last MH note. 11 years ago (almost to the day), I had to leave a tour to fly home and be with my family when my father passes away. Some amazing dudes stepped in to cover for me and to help the band out. I am filling in for a legend who was replaced a legend in a legendary band on their farewell tour.

Despite the fact that Slayer is the reason I wanted to play heavy music, it’s beyond my utmost honor to asked to do this. Learning 19 songs (Not just songs, SLAYER songs) has been a daunting task and I have worked very hard to do Gary and the entire camp proud. As we all here send our love and support to @garyholt_official as he goes through a life altering time, the rallying this camp has done is amazing.

Thank you all for your support as I grab the baton for a few shows and fly the Bay Area flag high on stage right. And lastly, the biggest hero is @martarino for being so selfless after having her partner home for 2 days, sends him off to follow this crazy dream. All hail the Queen.”

Remaining dates on that run include:
12/05 Stockholm, SWE – Hovet
12/06 Oslo, NOR – Spektrum
12/08 Helsinki, FIN – Helsingin Jäähalli

Burning Witches To Re-Release Debut Album And Live EP “Burning Alive”

Old school heavy metal newcomers Burning Witches are pleased to announce that they will be re-issuing their acclaimed debut album ‘Burning Witches’ on January 18th 2019, via Nuclear Blast. In addition to this, the Swiss witches will pack in their live EP ‘Burning Alive’ as a bonus with the release.

Burning Witches released their sophomore studio album “Hexenhammer” earlier this month to rapturous praise. “Hexenhammer” was produced in Little Creek Studios by the same team as its predecessor: V.O. Pulver (Pro-Pain, Destruction, Nervosa, Pänzer) and Destruction legend Schmier, who also helped and advised as a close friend of the band. The result is a truly brilliant heavy metal album.
