Ihsahn To Unleash New Album “Ámr” In May – Album Details Unveiled

Emperor mainman Ihsahn reveals a May 04th release date via Candlelight/Spinefarm for his new effort “Ámr“. Opeth guitarist Fredrik Åkesson lends a guest solo to the track “Arcana Imperii“. Tells Ihsahn of that and the performance of his longtime drummer, Tobias Ørnes Andersen on the new release:

“It’s just lovely to work with Tobias. I know that he can technically handle anything I throw at him. But more importantly, when I say like; ‘I want this to feel like the vacuum between words in a conversation with Hannibal Lecter,’ he will say, ‘Yeah, I get that!’ [Laughs] So for him, it’s not about showing off, it’s always about relating to the vibe.

With Fredrik, we met first time in Oslo, when I did my debut solo show as support to Opeth and later we’ve hung out on different festivals when we happen to play the same day. Last time in Japan when we played there with Emperor and Opeth. We were talking about guitars and I said, ‘Not to kiss up to you or anything, but you’re absolutely one of my favourite players, so some day I might call you for a guest solo…’ and he says, ‘I’m in!’ He did a fabulous job.”

Speaking further of the material, Ihsahn explains:

“Knowing that the form would be somewhat similar to what I did on the previous album, and given that I write stuff in a certain way, I wanted to change the wrapping this time. So instead of going with my go-tos of strings and orchestration, I focused on analog synths and more in-your-face sounds.

It goes back to the beginning of Emperor, when we brought in strings and horns inspired by orchestral movie scores by John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith, but at the same time we loved all those eerie synth soundtracks of, for example, John Carpenter‘s ‘Halloween‘.

I’ve also been listening to some contemporary R&B and hip-hop stuff with those deep, deep 808s. It’s just somehow darker than a lot of metal or black metal. It has a depth and an energy to it that I find captivating, so I wanted to explore those arrangement styles as well.”

“Every album I intend to make the darkest album ever. I never set out to make anything more melodic or accessible. However, growing up on ’80s metal, plus having a rather wide range of musical influences, I often end up with quite contrasting elements. This is my seventh solo album, so in the end it really comes down to methods and perspectives that keep me exited and fired up about what I’m working on. If I’m not excited about it, I can’t expect anybody else to be!”

Ihsahn Performs New Song “My Heart Is Of The North” Live

Following Emperor’s “In The Nightside Eclipse” 20th anniversary shows, Ihsahn announced he was getting back to work on new solo material and would be doing new live shows without his usual backing band Leprous.

One of those shows took place in Canada recently at Heavy Montreal, where Ihsahn unveiled a new track titled “My Heart Is Of The North.” Give it a listen below (thanks to Metal Injection). While there’s some odd proggy psychedelia, it sounds like this one won’t be the unlistenable overly experimental train wreck that was “Das Seelenbrechen” (reviewed here).

Ihsahn Working On New Material

After Emperor reunited for a run of 20th anniversary shows, Ihsahn is back working on new solo material and will apparently no longer be using the members of Leprous as his backing band. Ihsahn had this to say:

“Back on track with new music and new live shows!

“First of all, the ‘In the Nightside Eclipse’ 20th anniversary shows with Emperor have been a big priority for me in 2014 and I would like to thank everyone on stage, behind the stage and in front of the stage for making this celebration such a great experience!

“Also, a special thanks to Ibanez Guitars, Blackstar Amplification, Rotosound Music Strings and Norsk Musikk Distribusjon for all the continued support on the road!

“Now, this has not kept me entirely busy for the whole year, so since January I’ve also been writing material for the next Ihsahn album, partly interrupted by rehearsals, shows and a total rebuild of our studio.

“On the live front, several shows are all ready announced for 2015, and I’m excited to tell you that I’ll be back on stage with a new, handpicked line-up that I am confident will take my songs to a new dimension.

“On that note, I’d like to thank Leprous for a fantastic collaboration over many years!! They have been invaluable in getting my songs to the stage and we’ve had some great trips around the world. Maybe now we’ll actually get to watch each other’s shows

“That’s it from an autumn-dressed Telemark……Now, to the batcave!”

The forthcoming solo album from Ihsahn will follow last year’s “Das Seelenbrechen” (reviewed here), an experimental release that saw the musician going in a very different direction from previous albums.

9. Sub Alter
10. See
11. Entropie (Bonus Track)
12. Hel (Bonus Track)

For more info on the album, you can also check out our interview with Ihsahn at this location.

Recorded at his own studio in Norway in collaboration with drummer Tobias Ornes Anderson (Leprous), “Das Seelenbrechen” takes its name from Nietzche’s famed Human, All Too Human: A Book of Free Spirits and eschews traditional metal instrumentation in favor of a limitless textural landscape that evokes the freewheeling spirit of artists like Diamanda Galas, Scott Walker, and John Zorn.

An exploratory recording that is a musical contrast to the progressive shades and saxophone augmentations of the former Emperor vocalist/guitarist’s previous two albums (2009’s “After” and 2011’s “Eremita”), “Das Seelenbrechen” exists in an entirely unfamiliar sonic world as Ihsahn draws upon his most esoteric influences, fully embracing the spirit of the avant-garde.

Ihsahn Comments On Upcoming Album “Das Seelenbrechen”

As was recently announced, Candlelight Records has confirmed October 22nd as the North American release date for “Das Seelenbrechen,” the fifth solo album from Ihsahn, and follow-up to last year’s “Eremita” (reviewed here).

Das Seelenbrechen will be available on compact disc, a limited edition digibook (with expanded graphics and liner notes), and double 180-gram clear vinyl. Pre-orders are set to launch via online and physical retail outlets beginning September 10th. The following press release was issued about the album:

“Das Seelenbrechen is a bold and adventurous recording that is a musical contrast to the progressive shades and saxophone augmentations of the former Emperor vocalist/guitarist’s previous two albums (2009’s After and 2011’s Eremita). The recording exists in an entirely unfamiliar sonic world as Ihsahn draws upon his most esoteric influences, fully embracing the spirit of the avant-garde. Comprising ten vivid but disparate explorations in sound that range from bittersweet electronica to deranged and feral improvisation, Das Seelenbrechen is every bit as dark and destructive as the artist’s previous work but is far more disorientating and disturbing than anything he has attempted in his past.”

Ihsahn himself states: “Musically, this album is a very deliberate sidestep to what I have been doing; a necessity to reset the creative parameters so not to fall into formula. I think I do my best work slightly outside of my comfort zone and I’ve wanted to do something like this for a long time. Free form and improvisational can be scary for a musician but it is very liberating at the same time.”

Recorded at his own studio in Norway in collaboration with drummer Tobias Ornes Anderson (Leprous), “Das Seelenbrechen” eschews traditional metal instrumentation in favor of a limitless textural landscape that evokes the freewheeling spirit of artists like Diamanda Galas, Scott Walker, and John Zorn.

In discussing the album, Ihsahn notes, “even though my music has changed over the years, I feel there is a source of inspiration at the bottom of it all that is constant. The general idea for this album was to try and dig deep into this raw source and express it without too much refinery and do so within a less familiar musical landscape. It is the reason for several purely improvised songs and parts on this album. I spontaneously performed with just lyrics and the idea of the atmosphere I was wishing to create. While many will feel it sounds different, I don’t think it is necessarily different from my previous album. And in my head, it will fit in perfectly with my plans for the sixth album.”

“Das Seelenbrechen” takes its name from Nietzche’s famed “Human, All Too Human: A Book of Free Spirits.” Writings by the 19th century philosopher and other historical figures have often found their way into Ihsahn’s songwriting. “The title is taken from one of his aphorisms on art and how, in its purest form, is neither good nor bad,” says the front man. The album’s abstract packaging, again conceived by Spanish graphic artist Ritxi Ostariz, embraces the aphorisms essence. “Of all my albums, my goals for this one have been the most abstract. I’ve had quite a rollercoaster ride putting it together but now that it is done I must say I am very pleased.”

The track listing is:

1. Hilber
2. Regen
3. NaCl
4. Pulse
5. Tacit 2
6. Tacit
7. Rec
8. M
9. Sub Alter
10. See
11. Entropie (bonus)
12. Hel (bonus)
