You can’t talk about the true greats of folk-inspired melodic death metal without reverent mention of Ensiferum, and with Two Paths they once more affirm their place in the pantheons of the genre. Further building upon the thrilling metallic hybrid honed across six full-lengths, Two Paths is simultaneously the Finnish quintet’s most epic and far-reaching collection and their most organic, which definitely sets it apart from the pack. Additionally, the album literally takes the concept of Two Paths to heart, with two different versions of standout tracks “Don’t You Say” and “God Is Dead”. “Even though Ensiferum has always had clean vocals and choirs, harsh vocals have been the main style, and those songs worked so well with both styles that we decided to include both versions,” explains bassist/vocalist Sami Hinkka. With Mikko P. Mustonen again handling orchestral arrangements and Lassi Logren returning to play nyckelharpa and violin on a few songs, Hinkka is also more than happy that they brought “more bombastic orchestral and down to earth folk aspects” to the record, further fleshing out their vision. This also applies to the contribution of Gyula Havancsak, who provided the artwork for both Two Paths and its predecessor, One Man Army. “It was really nice to work with him again because he always wants to hear our ideas and then he adds his own magic and improvements to them, and the result is always astonishing.”

Eyes Of The Sun signs worldwide deal with Blacklight Media/Metal Blade Records

– September 12th, 2017 –

Blacklight Media/Metal Blade Records is proud to announce the worldwide signing of Brooklyn’s doom metal trio Eyes Of The Sun! After releasing their self-titled EP in 2010, and debut full-length Chapter I in 2013, the band is now poised to release their sophomore effort in 2018 via Blacklight Media/Metal Blade Records.

Eyes Of The Sun comments: “This is the absolute highlight of our journey and we look forward to the days ahead. We are extremely proud to be part of the Blacklight Media/Metal Blade family and its history. This is a testament to the support of our friends, family and fans that have been with of us throughout the years.”

Chris Santos (Blacklight Media) adds: “The beauty of Blacklight Media, for me, is that I get to work with bands from so many different genres of metal, and am so psyched to be building such a diverse and uniquely different roster of amazing metal bands. On that note, I’m super stoked to be working with my friends Eyes Of the Sun from right here in Brooklyn, who are a crushingly heavy, wall-shaking earthquake of heavy doom with a live sound that has to be heard to be believed.”

Eyes Of The Sun was conceived in early 2007 by bassist/vocalist Jeff Blanchard. Long-time friend Miguel De Jesus Jr. joined the ranks with Jeff a few months later on guitar. Within a few years, and after a couple of past members on second guitar and drums, Chris O’Neil joined as the permanent drummer. As a trio, they performed countless shows over the past 10 years, delivering their unique brand of doom metal – which leaves listeners with a range of emotions, that the band themselves then experience and extract from. The band explains: “It is known throughout the laws of science and nature that the sun creates and sustains life…Now it stands witness to the atrocities, depletion and vile consumption manifested by mankind, which it originally sustained life for. In our way, we portray what is seen through the Eyes Of The Sun.”

Stay tuned for more news about Eyes Of The Sun coming soon!

At The Gates Recruits New Guitarist Jonas Stålhammar, Announces Album Release

Swedish melodic death metal group At The Gates is now in the final stages of preparation for an upcoming new album, following 2014’s comeback release, “At War With Reality” (reviewed here).

After the departure of founding guitarist Anders Björler in March, the group is not only ready to give a comprehensive update on the new album’s status, but can also now announce the newest addition to the At The Gates line-up. The Swedes comment:

“We have finally decided on a new guitar player, and we are ready to rip again! Actually he was our first choice, and we are happy to have him on board. Jonas Stålhammar has been a friend since the late eighties (Tomas used to tape trade with him back then!), and our paths have crossed many times during our careers.

“We were looking for someone who had the same reference points as we do, someone from the same path, so to say, who understand the greatness of both Autopsy and King Crimson. Of course it was essential that our new member could fill the shoes of Anders’ performance-wise as well, but that was never an issue with Jonas. We were looking for someone with a deep understanding of what At The Gates are about, someone who could contribute creatively to the band.

“Jonas Stålhammar will be a full member from day one, and will play on the upcoming full length album, scheduled for recording in November 2017 – January 2018. We currently have 11 songs ready for said album, and are more inspired than perhaps ever before. You can expect a full-on At The Gates record with all the classic elements of the band. It is by far the most comprehensive album of the band to date, and will span all the way across the different elements of the band’s sound. We are super-excited for 2018. It will be a good year for At The Gates, and our fans, for sure.”

Adrian Erlandsson – Drums
Jonas Björler – Bass
Tomas Lindberg – Vocals
Jonas Stålhammar – Guitar
Martin Larsson – Guitar

“Even though the release is over a year old now I always want to release a video for every song on the album, which is why this video comes out now. It’s been one of the more popular songs among fans and it’s one of my personal favourites from the album and so I decided to release this guitar play-through and lyric video all rolled into one.”

Marty Friedman Premieres New Music Video For “Whiteworm” From Upcoming New Album “Wall Of Sound”

Former Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman premieres a new music video for the song “Whiteworm”, taken from the upcoming new album “Wall Of Sound”, which is due to land in stores this Friday, August 04th through Prosthetic Records.

Check out now “Whiteworm” below.

States Friedman of the filming:

“The ‘Whiteworm‘ video has a definite ‘real world’ Japanese look, but not the over the top ‘exported Japanese look’ that many people are familiar with when they see Japan related content. It was directed by top class Japanese music video director Junya Masuyama, who has done hit videos with superstars of every genre of Japanese music. I chose him to challenge him to put a foreigner (myself) into a very Japanese atmosphere in such a way that was not ‘Japan overload’. It was quite easy for him to do so, as his videos tend to be minimalistic, with the focus on one or two subtle themes. In this case the themes being the very delicate and simple idea of a little boy playing a video game waiting for the rain to stop, and me playing aggressively and calmly. Japan can be known for its wildness, but it also corners the market on subtle things. I went the subtle route on this video to contrast with the wildness of the guitar work in ‘Whiteworm‘.”

New Album “Walk The Earth” Detailed By Europe

Europe is pleased to announce the upcoming release of a new studio album, “Walk The Earth,” on October 20, 2017.

If Europe’s 2015 album “War Of Kings” was the album that made the rock world realize what a formidable act Europe had become, then “Walk The Earth” is the album that is set to establish the band as one of the most exciting contemporary rock acts of current times.

“Walk The Earth” will feature original artwork by famed Los Angeles artist Mike Sportes of Filth Mart. Check it out below. “We were in the studio a few days into recording and Dave (Cobb, Producer) comes in wearing this very cool t-shirt with one of Mike’s designs on it. Immediately, we knew we had to check Mike’s other work and have him come up with an exclusive design for us based on the vibe of the album. We are very proud to have his amazing artwork as the Walk The Earth album cover!’ – Joey Tempest commented on the cover.

From the anthemic sound of the opening track, “Walk The Earth,” to the heavy vibe that is “Haze,” from the instant melody of “Election Day,” to the lyrical content of “Kingdom United,” “Walk The Earth” is the album that should see Europe rightly acclaimed as a band at the height of its powers.

The wonderful melodies and depth of Joey Tempest’s vocals along with a powerhouse rhythm section and the guitar playing of John Norum, one of the great underrated guitarists. Norum’s guitar playing shines across the record. This is an album that is big in its scope and sound. Much like previous album “War Of Kings,” “Walk The Earth” is an album that has instant appeal but is also an album that needs to be lived with, in order to uncover its depth. The album was recorded at famed Abbey Road Studios in London with Grammy winning producer Dave Cobb (Rival Sons, Shooter Jennings, Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton).

The track listing is:

1. Walk The Earth
2. The Siege
3. Kingdom United
4. Pictures
5. Election Day
6. Wolves
7. GTO
8. Haze
9. Whenever You’re Ready
10. Turn To Dust

Xentrix Unveils New Band Lineup

Xentrix just checked in with the following announcement about bringing on a new vocalist and gearing up for live activity once again:

“It’s been a while since we posted any Xentrix news, and to be totally honest, this has been down to the fact that we weren’t sure if there would be anymore news or even anymore Xentrix.

“At the end of 2015 Chris Astley, our singer/guitarist had decided he didn’t want to be a part of Xentrix or any other band for that matter, and so once again he was out of the line up. This left us (the remaining three members) with the option to call it a day or try and find a replacement.

“We knew full well that the vocals are always the most difficult thing for any band to replace, but we wanted to carry on doing shows and making new metal music, so we set out on the arduous task of finding a new vocalist for the band. For the past 18 months we’ve been trying to find that right person and it has been incredibly frustrating how many times we thought we had found the new addition to our line up only to discover, for one reason or another, it wasn’t to be. We’d like to thank everyone that auditioned and demoed for us, we experienced some great voices and really cool people.

“But after a chance meeting at last year’s Bloodstock Festival we found the right man for the job and so Xentrix would like to welcome Mr. Jay Walsh (Bull Riff Stampede) as our new singer / guitarist. We’re super excited to have Jay on board and have already started writing and demoing new material. Most importantly, we can’t wait to get back to doing what we love the most, playing live!”

Xentrix 2017 consists of:

Kristian Havard – Guitar
Chris Shires – Bass
Jay Walsh – Vocals/Guitar
Dennis Gasser – Drums
