Details Of New Album “Nagual Sun” Issued By I Klatus

Chicago doom/sludge eclectics I Klatus will release the new album “Nagual Sun” October 13th via digital download and analog (cassette) formats. The highly anticipated follow-up to 2012’s “Kether” is the band’s third full-length album (and fifth release overall). An official video for album track “Sorcerer’s Gaze” is available in the player below.

The overall sound of “Nagual Sun” maintains the gritty roots for which I Klatus is known, while at the same time launches the group into new and more fully fleshed-out dimensions of weirdness. Tom Denney is the primary soothsayer behind I Klatus. Denney, whose background is steeped in the visual arts, has provided artwork and monsters for a laundry list of signed metal acts in the community (Kylesa, Black Cobra, Samothrace, Cannibal Corpse, Cephalic Carnage and Rwake just to name a few). His guitar squalls hard against the shores of this stoner metal effort, but also manages to rise above the storm in melodic hymns. Denney trades growling vocals with bass player, John E. Bomher, Jr. (Bury The Machines, Yakuza), who keeps things grinding nicely, while also providing some sweeter tones when they let songs open up and sweep across more ethereal planes.

Bomher doubles as the band’s producer with his extensive experience in the studio; his work on the album sets this release head and shoulders above their previous efforts in terms of production quality. The drums are championed by Chris Wozniak (Lair of the Minotaur, Earthen Grave, Serpent Crown) who metes out doom in guttural timing. Wozniak just pounds and pounds, hitting that sonic-pocket, which gives the stoner/doom genre its feeling of lift and expansiveness. Some noises and textures by former member, Robert Bauwens, are also tucked into the nooks and crannies of these tracks.

The track listing for the album is:

Side A:
1. Beneath the Waves
2. Serpent Cults
3. Sorcerer’s Gaze
4. Moment of Devastation

Side B:
1. The Alivist
2. Jaws of the Shark
3. Father John Thomas (The Penitent)
4. Final Communion

Earthen Grave Playing East Coast Shows This Weekend, Live Footage Posted Online

Amidst a cluster of regional Summer tours, including recent performances throughout the Midwest and Southern U.S. and a show in Canada, Chicago’s orchestral epic doom outfit Earthen Grave will head east this week.

The band will play an early show at Acheron in Brooklyn, New York this Friday, preceded by a concert by bassist Ron Holzner’s other band The Skull with Eric Wagner at Saint Vitus Bar. The next day Earthen Grave will travel to Connecticut for a performance at Stoner Hands of Doom XII on Saturday alongside RoadSaw, Ichabod, Raw Radar War, Pilgrim, Earthride, Revelation, Pale Divine, Iron Man, Elder, War Injun and tons more at the four-day all-ages event. Earthen Grave will be unveiling a brand new track at the East Coast shows this weekend as well.

Earthen Grave will also be supporting Kill Devil Hill (featuring Rex Brown and Vinny Appice) Thursday Sept 13th at Chicago’s Double Door, and the performance is to be streamed live on Gigity.TV. Specifics will be posted on the band’s website shortly. Earthen Grave recently performed at the two-day Days Of The Doomed II Festival in Cudahy, Wisconsin alongside Solace, Blood Farmers, Earthride, Revelation, Argus and more.

The outfit then crossed into Canada and played a first international show, as part of the Music & Beyond Festival in Ontario where the band performed within a deconsecrated wood cathedral. Several weeks later as the group was set to play in New Orleans, the show was canceled en-route. Making last-minute arrangements, EG ended up joining the bill at a raging, beer-soaked CD release party for Hipsterectomy in Austin, and also landed a spot on Ripple Festival in Dallas where the infamous Sherman from Earthride joined for two songs, and guitarist Jason Muxlow met one his biggest metal influences when he busted a guitar string mid-set and John Perez stepped out of the crowd to fix it. View footage from a recent show after the jump.

Upcoming live shows are:

8/31/2012 The Acheron – Brooklyn, NY w/ Iron Man, War Injun, Kin of Ettins
9/01/2012 El ‘n’ Gee – New London, CT @ SHoD Fest
9/13/2012 The Double Door – Chicago, IL w/ Kill Devil Hill

The following press release was also issued about the band:

“Boasting a powerful, dynamic style of plodding doom metal surging with classic heavy metal vigor, the six members of the band coalesce their metal aptitude into one entity with EARTHEN GRAVE. Founded in 2008 by guitarist Jason Muxlow (The Living Fields, Wintering) and drummer Scott Davidson (ex-Stonehenge, owner of Rebel Radio), the duo recruited bassist Ron Holzner (formerly of Trouble, Debris Inc., Place of Skulls, etc.), vocalist Mark Weiner (Trifog), guitarist Tony Spillman (Spillage), and renowned classical violinist Rachel Barton Pine on extended range electric flying V violin.

“A year after the creation of EARTHEN GRAVE, this union of talented musicians released their first recordings as the five-song Dismal Times demo, receiving immediate praise from underground metal and stoner rock media outlets and fans alike. The next few years saw the band playing intimate club shows as well as providing support for international touring acts on stages around Chicago and regionally throughout the Midwest and East Coast. This has sharpened each member’s skills within the unit and had defined their roles more prominently, fueling the already intoxicating chemistry of the band to dramatic new levels.

“In late April of this year, EARTHEN GRAVE entered the studio to create their mammoth first album, simply entitled Earthen Grave. Produced by Ron Holzner, and released on CD and via digital download via his own indie label Claude & Elmo Music, this layered opus showcases even more range and diversity to the band’s commanding material, clocking in with over an hour of epic music!

“This weekend EARTHEN GRAVE will take part in Days of the Doomed II Festival in Cudahy, Wisconsin, joining Solace, Blood Farmers, Earthride, Revelation, Argus and many others over the two-day event. More shows are booked throughout Chicago and abroad over the coming weeks, and , later in the Summer they’ll play Brooklyn on their way to take part in Stoner Hands of Doom XII Fest on September 1st, the annual four-day all-ages gathering also listing RoadSaw, Ichabod, Raw Radar War, Pilgrim, Earthride, Revelation, Pale Divine, Iron Man, Elder, War Injun and tons more at this year’s installment.”
