Devin Townsend Announces “Empath Europe – Volume 1” Tour Dates

Canadian heavy music artist, Devin Townsend, recently announced the release of his forthcoming new album, Empath, for March 29th, and today he reveals the dates for the Empath Europe – Volume 1 tour, starting in November.

Devin comments: “After a year of intensive recording, mixing, and reflection, I have decided where I want to take the next level of my career as a live performer. I have had success and great memories from both the Devin Townsend Project as well as Strapping Young Lad, but now I am fortunate enough to be able to follow the muse where it currently leads. I am proud to announce that for the first ‘band’ tour of the Empath cycle, I am going to stretch my wings in ways I have not had the opportunity to do before and tour with a ‘backing band’ that can shift and morph as the music dictates instead of adhering to a click track. ‘Empath Europe Volume 1’ will be the first example of this, and the first tour will be in Europe (other territories to follow).

“I have spent considerable effort think about the things I wanted to do for these shows, and one thing I came out of DTP with was the awareness that I wanted to incorporate a more improvisational element to what I do. With the best players I can find, my plan is to interpret my back catalogue, as well as the Empath material, in ways that may change nightly. less computers, and less of a rigid structure. I want to use Volume 1 as a way to bring my music to people in a potentially new way. People playing music…

“I hope you will consider joining me at these concerts. As a performer, it’s important to be able to be willing to react, and my hope is that each of these shows will be a unique experience.

“Thank you for allowing me to do what I do. See you there?”

The tour dates are as follows:

December 2 – Simm City, Vienna, Austria
December 3 – X Tra, Zurich, Switzerland
December 6 – Academy, Dublin, Ireland
December 7 – Limelight, Belfast, UK
December 9 – SWG3 Galvanisers, Glasgow, UK
December 10 – Albert Hall, Manchester, UK
December 12 – Roundhouse, London, UK
December 13 – Rock City, Nottingham, UK

Devin Townsend & Machine Head’s Robb Flynn Speak On “Beyond The Pale” Allegedly Lifting A Strapping Young Lad Riff

The social media “riff police” has taken to calling out Machine Head’s Robb Flynn for allegedly stealing a riff off of Strapping Young Lad‘s track “Love?” in their newly released single, “Beyond The Pale“. Check out both tracks below, and read Townsend and Machine Head vocalist/guitarist Robb Flynn’s discussion on the matter.

People asking me about riff similarities: I don’t have an opinion really. I’ve written riffs my whole career that sound like something else.

— Devin Townsend (@dvntownsend) November 17, 2017

I’ve used whole themes from other albums, movies or soundtracks. Art is a collage of your experiences, you taking clippings and reassemble.

— Devin Townsend (@dvntownsend) November 17, 2017

Heres the best part about comparison of MH new song to ‘Love’ I basically ripped off the SYL chorus from this song: https://t.co/0QWpBGowBD

— Devin Townsend (@dvntownsend) November 17, 2017

Shout out to @dvntownsend for being so cool. The Riff Police pulled me over, I got a $300 infraction for that one!! Like Dime bag always used to tell me “we’re all just sharing riffs man”. https://t.co/DXO8BmqTLR

Got a lot of respect for you Devin, super talented musician, amazing producer (as the palaces burn production crushes all!)

And while I would proudly admit that I stole a Riff from you… Was just a happy accident.

Riff on brother!! https://t.co/G8NXNcJ9Ln

Scour Announces First Live Show At Blastfest

Pantera? Down? Obviously you know the bands, being a metal fan and all. Then you would also know that they were fronted by none other than Philip Anselmo. Well, he’s back with an all-star lineup for his extreme metal project Scour.

With music created by Derek Engemann of Cattle Decapitation and John Jarvis of Pig Destroyer, Scour also features current and former members of Decrepit Birth and Agoraphobic Nosebleed. July 15th saw the band release a debut self-titled debut EP which can be heard in full below.

Anselmo previously commented, “The Scour thing was just something that popped up – it’s something I think I can kill, I can lay it out. It’s predominantly modern-ish thrashy black metal stuff. I’m going to put my own spin on it. I don’t have to sound like your boy from Gorgoroth to get the point across – there’s other ways of singing over that style of music, and I shall employ many styles.”

February 23rd, 2017 will see the band perform live for the first time ever, and what is a more fitting arena then Blastfest in Bergen, Norway? They join the Devin Townsend Project, Dying Fetus, Between The Buried And Me and many more bands over the weekend from February 23-25.
