Cynic Posts New Single, “Humanoid” Online

American progressive death metal legends Cynic has posted a new song online entitled, “Humanoid.” You can check it out below. The song marks the first output of new material since drummer Sean Reinert parted company with frontman Paul Masvidal, with the former’s place being taken by Matt Lynch.

Frontman Paul Masvidal comments: “‘Humanoid’ is a portrait of contrasts, like those between struggle and stillness, or the immediate against the limitless. Our Stargate is planet Earth — consciousness, the transmitter. We, sentient creatures of light, are alive now — on a sphere, floating in a galaxy fixed amidst the infinite. It’s quite miraculous to be aware of this, and it invokes a sense of urgency and empowerment that is unlike anything else.”

The artwork for “Humanoid” features a detail from the painting “Ayahuasca Dream” by Robert Venosa, Cynic’s longtime collaborator and celebrated artist who passed away in 2011.

“Humanoid” was recorded by Masvidal and longtime Cynic bassist Sean Malone and marks the debut of the band’s new drummer, Matt Lynch, who brings a renewed sense of energy to the Cynic rhythm section.

To mix “Humanoid”, Cynic partnered with renowned engineer Adam “Nolly” Getgood. Malone comments: “Nolly’s approach is equal parts expertise and intuition. Working with him was quick, clear, but most of all, musical.”

Drummer Sean Reinert Exits Cynic – Settlement Over Use Of Band Name Reached

Cynic haven’t been too active since 2015 when a a dispute emerged between frontman/guitarist Paul Masvidal and drummer Sean Reinert. At the time Reinert parted ways with the band, citing growing tensions and a general unhappiness with what he felt were suboptimal performances from Paul Masvidal.

He also mentioned that in order for Masvidal to legally continue performing under the Cynic name, they would need to come to a signed agreement. Drummer Sean Reinert has now announced that such an agreement has reached and it comes with his official exit. States Reinert via Facebook:

“Today I post with a heavy heart, but also a lightened spirit. A settlement has been reached between Paul and I in regards to CYNIC. I am unable to disclose any of the details regarding this agreement but I am at peace with the arrangement. I am going to step aside from CYNIC and continue with my personal projects – Paul is going to continue with CYNIC and his.

I want to take this last Facebook post as an opportunity to humbly thank all of the musicians, engineers, technicians, companies, booking agents, managers, crew, press, labels and friends that I’ve worked with (and will likely continue to) over this past 30-year span.

Most of all – I would like to thank the fans, who to this day still blow me away with their loyalty and love. You’ve always been the inspiration and the fuel for the machine!

To Paul, I sincerely wish him and the musicians he hires nothing but the best.

Love,
Sean”

One Machine Releases “Forewarning” Music Video

Steve Smyth’s One Machine is gearing up to release second album “The Final Cull” on September 18 via Scarlet Records, which was tracked at Death Island Studios with Marco Angioni and Tue Madsen helming.

Today, One Machine invites fans to step inside virtual reality with a new music video for “Forewarning,” directed and edited by Scott Canty of Dark North Media. Check it out below.

Steve Smyth comments: “The video depicts a wild ride into the not so distant future, where we find our rebel team entering a virtual world to reach their leader, the Hacker, only to be interrupted by the world leader the Cynic, busy blanketing all media with his driveling, meaningless rhetoric, with points inside his speech aimed at making our world seem hopeless without him and his leadership. In comes our hero the Hacker to spread the message of hope and independent thinking outside of conformity, and the war ensues, complete with a virus sent via virtual reality. Who will win? Watch and find out!”
