BATUSHKA: Polish black metal legion joins the Metal Blade Records roster

– October 18th, 2017 –

‘Litourgiya’ re-issue to see release November 3rd

Polish black metal legion BATUSHKA are the latest additions to the Metal Blade Records’ US roster.

Pronounced “Batjushka,” the band’s Cyrillic name Батюшка means “father” and is used to address an Eastern Orthodox priest. Despite their themes and imagery, they are not a Christian band. The identities of the members are unknown, but they are involved with other bands. Their live lineup contains eight members.

Metal Blade will re-issue BATUSHKA‘s Litourgiya full-length, initially released in 2015 in limited quantity via Witching Hour Productions, on November 3rd. Despite its relative cult status, the record earned critical accolades from journalists “in the know.” In a 4.5/5 rating, Sputnik Music championed the record noting, “Crushing intensity is a term bandied about with gleeful abandon nowadays, but it’s more than applicable when used to describe BATUSHKA‘s brand of Slavonic-influenced black metal. The mysterious nature of the band’s members only finishes off the creation of a truly intriguing entity, but in all honesty ‘Litourgiya‘ has done most of the hard work for them; a violent, devout, moving and sibylline affair, and one that will hopefully in time be revered as such.” No Clean Singing concurred, “The music is dark, heaving, and very heavy – with bombastic outbreaks of wildfire and thunder – and the bleak, majestic melodies are effective at getting under the skin. But what sets the music apart and makes the album especially memorable are the vocals. In addition to the incinerating shrieks that you might expect in a black metal album, you’ll hear reverberating liturgical chants in what I’m told is Church Slavonic – the language used in the Orthodox Church in such places as Poland, Russia, and Ukraine, as well as nations in the Balkan Peninsula.” Nine Circles concurred, “to say BATUSHKA is a band that is able to create layers is an understatement…’Litourgiya‘ is a combination of ancient rites and modern blasts; a work of shocking magnitude that has gone almost unnoticed by the metal community at large,” while Metal Bandcamp hailed, “an excellent piece of work, filled with incredible instrumentality that elevates black metal to new heights.”

Physical pre-orders for Litourgiya are currently available at metalblade.com/batushka

Litourgiya track-listing:
1. Yekteniya I: Ochishcheniye
2. Yekteniya II: Blagosloveniye
3. Yekteniya III: Premudrost’
4. Yekteniya IV: Milost’
5. Yekteniya V: Svyatyy Vkhod
6. Yekteniya VI: Upovanie
7. Yekteniya VII: Istina
8. Yekteniya VIII: Spasenie

Embrace the essence of musical ecstasy, fascination, passion and the urge to create… the substitute of modernity and classical perfection, a road to freedom… It’s a distinct world of sounds lavishing us with all their divine glory, sounds of liberation, sounds of spiritual spheres, sounds of harmony…

To preview and purchase the album, please visit: metalblade.com/tbdm – where an exclusive interview with front-man Trevor Strnad (written by Kim Kelly) can also be viewed. Read on for some reviews of the critically acclaimed Nightbringers:

“‘Nightbringers‘ is the album of the year.”MetalSucks.net

“‘Nightbringers‘ makes for one of the band’s best records… if not their best.”MetalInjection.net

“…’Nightbringers‘ is without a doubt the band’s best release since their 2007 breakthrough.”NoCleanSinging.com

“While the Black Dahlia Murder have always been an impressive band, ‘Nightbringers’ finds them on top of their game and performing better than ever before.”Exclaim.ca

Rather than meticulously plan things out or stick rigidly to any kind of template, when it comes to writing, The Black Dahlia Murder prefer to let things happen organically. In the hands of guitarist Brian Eschbach – who co-founded the band with front-man Trevor Strnad in 2001 – and new recruit Brandon Ellis (Arsis, ex-Cannabis Corpse), Nightbringers is rich with dynamic riffs that are at once fresh and classic The Black Dahlia Murder, resulting in a collection that shifts through many moods and effortlessly incorporates various elements of extreme metal. While Strnad explores a variety of themes and ideas with his lyrics, they are united by the album’s title, which embraces a tenet that has been central to The Black Dahlia Murder‘s output since the very beginning. “Death metal and nighttime are synonymous to me,” Strnad explains. “We are the rulers of the darkened hours that the Christian good fears. A lot of archaic ideas that are still upheld – such as marriage and monogamy – came from Christianity, whether people want to acknowledge it or not, and to me, death metal has always been bucking that. It’s ‘being-the-villain music’, because we’re the enemy of Christianity, the enemy of all that is good and traditional. Death metal is for free thinkers, it’s for showing people the path to inner strength and operating on your own will, instead of being told what to do and living in fear, and songs like the title track and ‘Kings Of The Nightworld’ are about leading a legion of awakened minds into battle.”

Apostasy Records Signs Night In Gales

Apostasy Records announced that the label has signed German melodic death metal act Night In Gales. Fans of the early material can expect a proper rejuvenation of the band.

Night In Gales looks back at turbulent times: The first sign of life, 1995’s EP “Sylphlike,” was already one of the most successful metal-demos of all time. Therefore, label-powerhouse Nuclear Blast came into the picture, with whom the quintet signed a deal for a couple of albums. They also toured alongside In Flames, Hypocrisy, Children Of Bodom, Death, Dismember and many others and they played numerous festivals like Rockharz, the Wacken Open Air or the Summer Breeze. After some calmer years, the band returned with 2011’s brilliant album “Five Scars.” Only one year later, long term vocalist Bjoern Gooßes left the band to concentrate completely on his band The Very End.

Last year, the band announced the addition of original vocalist Christian Mueller who also sang on their initial EP “Sylphlike.” He finalized the new album, which marks a distinct step back to the band’s roots. Thus, the songs offer furious melodic twin guitar riffing, driven by technical death metal drumming, topped by a manic frustrated voice that sounds like someone is crucified upside down.

The band comments: “We are happy to confirm that Night In Gales has inked a new worldwide record deal with Germany’s finest in melodic death metal: Apostasy Records! It feels good to be back and we are 100% sure to have the full support of Tomasz and his Team, as these guys are true underground-proofed death metal maniacs, who run the label with the necessary passion and idealism. We are proud to be a part of the Apostasy roster among brothers in crime like Ablaze My Sorrow, This Ending, Nailed To Obscurity, Burial Vault, Fragments Of Unbecoming, Damnation Defaced, Sign Of Cain, a.m.o. The new album is ready to release and there will be some exiting news containing more details like album track list, cover artwork, editions a.s.o. really soon, so stay tuned for this! Cheers, NIG anno 2017”

Panorama – Featuring Members Of Unisonic, Adagio – To Issue Debut “Around The World”

Swiss/Finnish/American hard rock band, Panorama has signed with European label ROAR! Rock Of Angels Records for the debut album “Around The World” in early 2018.

The album features eleven tracks and is produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by bassist Dennis Ward (Unisonic, Pink Cream 69). The band also features ex-Adagio/Random Eyes vocalist Christian Palin, Gods of Silence guitarist Sammy Lasagni, Amoral guitarist Ben Varon and Gods of Silence drummer Philipp Eichenberger.

In 2008, Sammy Lasagni (Gods of Silence, ex-Kirk, ex-Godiva), met the Uruguay born singer Christian Palin (Random Eyes, ex-Adagio) for the first time when Godiva, supported the band Adagio – fronted by Christian. The chemistry between the two was immediately obvious so they decided that they would, at some point in time, try to make music together. The two kept in contact but the years plodded along until 2015 when a certain long telephone call on a cold winter’s day changed everything. Right then and there they decided to get to work. They began writing songs and in record time 15 new songs were born. They decided to work with Dennis Ward (Unisonic, Pink Cream 69) as a producer. The guys soon after met with Dennis and introduced their songs. Dennis was genuinely impressed. So impressed that he agreed to work with them and joined the band not only as producer, but as a bass player too.

Under the direction of Dennis Ward, who took over the whole production (produced, recorded, mixed and mastered), the band recorded the debut album “Around the World” partially at HOFA studios in Karlsdorf Germany and at The TrakShak, Dennis’ private studio. It was a long process but the album turned out fantastic. A hard rock production with a bit of Scandinavian influences and Christian has proven himself to be a world-class singer. Together with ROAR (Rock of Angles Records) Panorama found the perfect partner to release “Around the World” in early 2018.

More to come…

New Song “Plus Près De Toi (Closer To You)” Available From Amenra

Belgian heavy music luminaries Amenra shared the centerpiece “Plus près de toi (Closer to You),” the new single from the new album “Mass VI,” coming via Neurot Recordings on October 20th.

About the piece, Colin H. Van Eeckhout comments…”The song is about a profound longing, a sadness you carry within. Solitude. The journey to come closer to the people, and things you loved and you miss. A melancholy hymn. Inspired by a translation of a 19th-century Christian hymn, Nearer To God To Thee. It made sense to write and sing in French. Those words felt like they had more poetic outcome, than the English substitute. By using French and Flemish on this album, I felt like I could keep it a little closer to home, to our hearts. It’s a part of our heritage.”

The track listing for the album is:

1. Children of the Eye
2. Edelkroone
3. Plus près de toi (Closer to you)
4. Spijt
5. A solitary reign
6. Diaken
