Howling Giant Streaming New Single “The Pioneer”

Writing tunes about space travel, doomed seafarers, and a sentient android hellbent on a camel-killing death crusade, Nashville’s Howling Giant this past August shared part one of the three part “Black Hole Space Wizard” concept record series.

A year later, the nerd power trio returns with part two of the adventure set for release on August 25th, 2017. Playing self indulgent, drop tuned, fuzzed out riffs, “Black Hole Space Wizard: Part 2” is again produced by the band, mixed by Kim Wheeler and mastered by Chris Fasco.

The EP features six cosmic progressive travels of The Pioneer continuing his quest for self-discovery and purpose on the husk planet, Earth. Drummer Zach Wheeler comments:

“Hopefully for our returning fans, it is accepted with open arms and an open mind. As Part 2 of the 3 piece saga, this EP was meant to focus on the travels and trials of The Pioneer, protagonist, and last of mankind. The music reflects his growth and self discovery on a post-apocalyptic planet Earth.

“To new fans/fresh ears, we’d like to invite them into the Black Hole Space Wizard universe through fat stomping riffs, spacey grooves, accessible vocal melody and juicy, pulpy sci-fi madness. We always try to refine our song writing and take one step into new territory with each release, pulling stylistically from whatever inspires us in the moment. Our recorded music is our best interpretation of the sounds we hear in our heads, and our goal is to make our sonic visions clearer with each release.”

Check out a video for first single “The Pioneer” below. Wheeler adds: “This track features a delicious bass riff that grounds the listener before introducing a triumphant chorus and stomping riffs. On this track, you can find Tom heating up the room with some fiery pentatonic exploration.”

Acephalix Unveils New LP “Decreation”

California death metal horde Acephalix – featuring members of Vastum, Necrot, Depressor, and more – has completed a third LP, and is preparing to unleash “Decreation” upon the public masses in September.

New label home 20 Buck Spin has unloaded a YouTube stream of the album’s pummeling second track, “Suffer (Life In Fragments),” along with early pre-orders for the record here.

The rotten corpse of Acephalix, the Bay Area’s beast of barbarism, has been re-animated. Abnormally deceased since the band’s Southern Lord debut, “Deathless Master,” the crushing return of “Decreation” leaves no bone unbroken and no skull intact. The album was recorded and mixed by Greg Wilkinson at Earhammer Studios (Vastum, Necrot, Ghoul), mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Nails, Obituary, Black Breath), and completed with artwork by Adam Burke (Occultation, Loss, Gatecreeper, Artificial Brain).

1. Upon This Altar
2. Suffer (Life In Fragments)
3. Mnemonic Death
4. God Is Laughing
5. Excremental Offerings

Sun Of The Sleepless Premieres New Song “The Owl” From Upcoming New Album “To the Elements”

Black metal unit Sun Of The Sleepless premieres a new song entitled “The Owl”, taken from the upcoming new album “To the Elements”, which will be released by Prophecy Productions in a variety of formats: as a digipak CD (with a 12-page booklet), a gatefold LP (on both black and limited silver vinyl), and as a collector’s 2xCD box (which includes the digipak CD, the out-of-print 1999 MCD Poems To The Wretches Hearts in a cardsleeve, a patch, and an autographed, hand-numbered certificate in a hotfoil-embossed box).

Check out now “The Owl” below.

Explains Sun Of The Sleepless:

“‘The Owl‘ is actually the first song that was written and recorded for the album. The verse riff/main theme of this song was the spark that lit the fire, so to speak. This was also the first song I recorded the drums for and it made me realize that Black Metal drumming is even more exhausting than I remembered it to be from — wait…18 years ago. ‘The Owl‘ is a hymn to the nocturnal self. The Owl as a symbol for individuality (in German we use the word “Kauz” — tawny owl — to describe a pariah) but also wisdom, superiority — the unrelenting spirit of the night. Musically, I really wanted to have this ‘lonesome nighttime atmosphere’ to be the absolute focus of this song. It draws elements from Empyrium (how come?), old The 3rd and the Mortal, Emperor and influences by some of the more melodic Swedish Black Metal Bands too. One of my favorites for sure. Sublime, free, forever at night — The Owl”

New Album “Covered In Black” Detailed By Anubis Gate

Danish progressive metal act Anubis Gate will release its seventh album “Covered in Black” on September 1st via Nightmare Records.

With six highly acclaimed albums, what can be said about a seventh album? It would be easy to say the following: It is our most mature album. Or how about this: We built on everything that came before it and added new twists and turns. Or this is our most accessible album perhaps.

But that wouldn’t be quite true. In fact it might even be quite untrue. Except for the part about building on past experiences, since everybody does that.

What would have been mature was to make an album resembling our previous album “Horizons”, going with the beautiful feel-good vibe of that album (though its topics were not all that feel-good)

Commented the band: “Instead, the writing of this album simply did not go in that direction. While ‘Covered In Black’ is a highly melodic affair, it is also challenging in a way none of our previous albums are. Dealing with, and dedicated to, people in dark places, this albums has a darker and more complex edge to it. Allowing ourselves to dig deeper into our collective pool of musical experiences and knowledge, the inspirations come from far across the spectrum. Ranging from classical chamber music, seventies prog and extending to thrash, with very eastern influences popping up,this is an album that is best heard as one piece, even if the individual tracks can stand on their own. Since we’ve come this far we also allowed ourselves that freedom.

“Is it a concept album? No. But it is a theme album. About people in dark places. From psychopaths, assassins to the more modern topics of being at the receiving end of what is bad about social media. Topics of lifelong failure and revenge are touched upon. The ten-song-long album has two suites, both consisting of three songs. One has the songs spread here and there on the album, while the other is connected as one long piece if you wish to listen to it that way. Wonderfully old-fashioned and just the way we like it. And it is, we feel, simply the best album we’ve ever done.”

The album was produced by Kim Olesen and Jacob Hansen, as per good tradition. The track listing is:

1. Psychotopia
2. The New Delhi Assassination
3. The Combat
4. Too Much Time
5. A Journey To Nowhere
6. Black
7. Blacker
8. Blackets
9. Operation Cairo
10. From Afar

New Album “The Forgotten Tome” Announced By Overoth

Irish extreme metal horde Overoth today revealed long awaited details for the follow up to the debut, “Kingdom Of Shadows.” With no less than ten tracks and over 40 minutes of extreme metal laden with orchestration, and artwork from none other than Will Simpson (Game Of Thrones, DC Comics), the quartet’s forthcoming grand opus entitled “The Forgotten Tome” is set for release on September 22nd via Hostile Media. The album will be available as a standard CD, limited edition heavyweight vinyl and as a digital download. Album pre-orders and bundle deals are available over here.

The band commented: “We’ve been working on this album for what seems like an aeon, but finally we’re pleased to announce that our hard work and determination for perfection has come to a close. We actually tracked the drums, guitars and vocals for this album around two years ago, and we had planned to add some subtle orchestration as we had done in our debut ‘Kingdom Of Shadows’… however… when Dan (guitars) got started, the songs yearned for much more than we had anticipated. It would be further months of writing, from violins to piano, to the use of ancient instruments like the duduk and ney flute and then back and forwards with mixing… it would appear mixing twenty instruments isn’t all that easy! We also had a grand vision for the artwork and working with a talent such as Will Simpson was a great experience, he really did bring our vision to life. The artwork is a story in itself, with multiple pieces all intertwined. There is more than what the cover art depicts, but we’ll reveal all that at some point in the very near future. Finally, ‘The Forgotten Tome’ is complete and we are set to unleash the beast into the world this September.

“Lyrically, for the most part this collection of tales at a first glance would appear fantasy based, with fables of war and magic, good and evil, but actually there is a more human narrative underlying each song. We have our own interpretation of these stories, and we hope that people can find it or come up with some other moral of their own.”

The band recorded “The Forgotten Tome” at Sonic Forge in Wales with producers Joe Thompson and Mike Hourihan at the helm. The track listing is:

1. Opus Obscura
2. Sigil Of The Empty Throne
3. Winter Of Iniquity
4. The Keeper
5. God Of Delusion
6. The Forgotten Tome
7. Leviathan Swallowed The Sun
8. Mar The Gates
9. Harbinger Of The End Times
10. Shadows In A Thousand Shades Of Black

Sons Of Crom Announces New Album “The Black Tower”

The Swedish / Finnish northerners from Sons Of Crom return later this summer with new album “The Black Tower.” The album is due for release on August 18th and will be available in multiple formats.

The whole visual presentation was crafted by Babalon Graphics, with the cover artwork available below after a stream of new single “Black Wings Up High.” The following press release was alos issued:

“The Riddle of Steel has been solved. The mountain’s call answered, the earth conquered and spent. Now, the stars beckon – celestial gateways unlocked through ancient sepulchers, divine bloodlines, and the undying fires of spiritual rebirth.

“Without regard for convention, this ethereal journey is set to unorthodox tones of grandiose heavy metal. Flowing from the deepest black abyss, through brooding melancholy and into the proud glory of the rising sun, this voyage is as bold as it is divergent.

“Join our hero on a perilous quest for the eternal truth beyond the shrouds of mortality, where time and space hold no ground and the misty veil between life and afterlife is a mere illusion. Sacrifice reason and ascend – enter the Black Tower.”
