BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE: ‘Venom’ Studio Footage Part One

U.K. metal titans BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE will release their fifth studio album, “Venom”, on August 14 via RCA. The CD marks the band’s first release since the departure of longtime bassist Jason James and addition of Jamie Mathias. Jamie, who has been playing and touring in bands for the last ten years, fronted the band REVOKER, which released an album, “Revenge For The Ruthless”, in 2011 on the Roadrunner label.

The first in a series of clips featuring behind-the-scenes footage from the making of “Venom” can be seen bleow.

Speaking to Kerrang! magazine, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE guitarist/vocalist Matt Tuck stated about Mathias: “He’s a Welsh lad. He sent in an audition tape and his was really good. We held auditions for a few guys, and when he came, he just smashed it. He fitted in instantly, especially with the Welsh connection. He plays like a beast and he sings like an angel.”

Produced by Carl Bown and Colin Richardson (SLIPKNOT, MACHINE HEAD, TRIVIUM) at Metropolis Studio in London, “Venom” is described in a press release as “an unrelenting, fierce step forward for BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE” and the band’s “heaviest record to date.”

“We’ve got massive hopes for this album,” Tuck told Kerrang! “We truly believe it’s going to be the biggest metal record of the year. We’ve had these feelings in the past and we’ve always been spot on, but this one feels way more special than anything else we’ve ever done, so, fingers crossed, it’s going to do what we want it to do.”

A new BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE song, “No Way Out”, is available for instant download now with all pre-orders at BulletForMyValentine.com.

A limited-edition “Venom” package is available exclusively through BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE‘s webstore. This bundle includes CD, vinyl and cassette versions of “Venom”, as well as custom t-shirt, bracelet and necklace. All purchases will include a pre-sale code for early access to tickets for their 2016 headlining tour.

BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE will head to South America in July for a headlining tour with support from MOTIONLESS IN WHITE before joining up with SLIPKNOT and LAMB OF GOD for this summer’s North American tour.

TOM GABRIEL FISCHER Says CELTIC FROST Reunion Is ‘Impossible’

Metal Chris of DCHeavyMetal.com conducted an interview with former HELLHAMMER/CELTIC FROST and current TRIPTYKON singer, guitarist, and main songwriter Tom Gabriel Fischer (a.k.a. Tom Gabriel Warrior) late last month at the Maryland Deathfest XIII in Baltimore, Maryland. You can now listen to the 19-minute chat using the SoundCloud widget below.

Asked if he prefers playing older songs or he likes performing the TRIPTYKON stuff more, or whether it is all just kind of the same to him, Tom responded: “It’s exactly the same to me. If I had my way, CELTIC FROST would have existed for many more albums. Unfortunately, certain people’s grand designs on their own fame and certain egotistical stunts interfered with that. And, eventually, the band became so unworkable that I personally said the only option that was left was leaving it. I formed TRIPTYKON, but in essence, it’s exactly the same thing I did with CELTIC FROST. It’s simply minus the egotism and the personality stunts. Even though it’s younger people, behind the scenes TRIPTYKON is far more mature than CELTIC FROST ever was. But musically, the whole infrastructure around the band, and my approach, and the way I produce and everything, it’s exactly the same. It’s basically what I would have done had CELTIC FROST persevered. So, to me, the CELTIC FROST songs merge perfectly with the TRIPTYKON songs. I really don’t see a difference. We try to strike a balance, because TRIPTYKON is not just me, it’s four people, and I don’t just wanna be a CELTIC FROST cover band. I think it’s fair enough to play half-half — half newer songs, half older songs — but I think we’re doing fine like that.

Regarding the possibility of a CELTIC FROST reunion, Tom said: “I’m afraid that’s impossible, yeah. I mean, there’s no more animosity between me and Martin [Eric Ain, bass] — we just met, actually, a few weeks ago, as we do from time to time — but I think that window has closed. Even though Martin once said, ‘Yeah, we’ll play music together again,’ but after that gargantuan disappointment, I don’t think I wanna set myself up for yet another one. CELTIC FROST was my life, and losing that twice wasn’t very easy. And I don’t trust these people anymore. I invested so much time and so much of my personal money and effort and my songs and my production and everything into the ‘Monotheist’ album, and I did this because I believed the band could exist for many years. Then I felt betrayed and stabbed in the back. And I really… If I would ever get involved with that again, it would probably end the same, and I don’t wanna do that. TRIPTYKON is a circle of friends, and I prefer that. And, you know, anything I wanna do creatively, I can do it in TRIPTYKON.”

In a 2011 interview with BigMusicGeek.com, Tom was asked at what point he realized that his tenure with CELTIC FROST was once again coming to an end. “To be quite honest, I had sensed it for some time,” he replied. “I just didn’t want to admit it.

CELTIC FROST was much more than just a band to me. It was my life, my ideology and pretty much represented my entire being. Of course, I didn’t want to see it destroyed again, so despite having all the inside information, I tried to disrupt its destruction and probably stayed too long even though it was fairly obvious that I couldn’t face the band. Actually, I blame the final drummer of CELTIC FROST for the destruction of the band. If Martin has any part of this, it’s his inactivity that opened the door to this. He simply did not want to involve himself in anything negative, which, on one hand, is commendable, but on the other hand, it’s simply not realistic in this world or within a band that works under pressure twenty four hours a day. You simply have to be a man and be involved, especially if certain personal conflicts threaten the whole band. Martin was initially reluctant to become involved and that basically opened the door for one person to let his ego run freely until there was really nothing left of the band.”

DEATH ANGEL’s MARK OSEGUEDA Checks In From New Album Writing Sessions

Vocalist Mark Osegueda of San Francisco Bay Area metal veterans DEATH ANGEL has posted a new video message from the songwriting sessions for the band’s next studio album. Check it out below.

As previously reported, DEATH ANGEL will enter the studio on October 1 to begin recording its new CD for an April 2016 release via Nuclear Blast.

Asked by Groovey of Groovey.TV what fans can expect from the follow-up to 2013’s “The Dream Calls For Blood”, DEATH ANGEL guitarist Ted Aguilar said: “It’s gonna be DEATH ANGEL. In my personal opinion, I don’t think we’re gonna try to top [‘The Dream Calls For Blood’]. You can’t recreate that moment in time. ‘The Dream Calls For Blood’ is ‘The Dream Calls For Blood’. This next album we’re writing… I mean, we’ve got some songs; [we’re] four songs in. No lyrics yet, but… It’s always gonna be heavy. The foundation of DEATH ANGEL is still there, but it’s kind of hard to describe what direction we’re going in until it’s recorded, mixed and mastered. ‘Cause the way DEATH ANGEL writes, we write a song, but it’s always evolving — up until the point of recording. Even when it comes down to the mixing. It’s just, like, ‘Ah, let’s change that up.'”

He continued: “‘The Dream Calls For Blood’, it’s a great record. We’re proud of it. And the next album, it’s just gonna be DEATH ANGEL in our mindset today. I’m not gonna say, ‘It’s gonna be this,’ and it ends up being a little different. Who knows what this album is gonna sound like? [But] it’s gonna be good.”

Asked if DEATH ANGEL has been writing any new material on the road, Ted said: “We’ve written some stuff on the road, and when we get back [home from the current tour], we’re gonna write some more. Then we’ve got Europe in July and August, and we’re gonna continue writing in Europe, on downtime and whatnot. ‘Cause there’s a lot of time on the road; plenty of hours go by, like right now. And then when we get home after Europe, in August, we’re gonna spend a couple of weeks off, then all of September is honing in and doing pre-production, writing a little more and just fixing the loose ends.”

DEATH ANGEL will release “A Thrashumentary” on July 24 via Nuclear Blast. The DVD was directed, shot and edited by Tommy Jones (KATAKLYSM, SOILWORK, LAMB OF GOD, CARCASS, TESTAMENT) of Videohammer Studios. The release will also include a full live album entitled “The Bay Calls For Blood”.

DEATH ANGEL‘s seventh album, “The Dream Calls For Blood”, sold 5,400 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 72 on The Billboard 200 chart.

Video: ANVIL Performs At Sweden’s MUSKELROCK Festival

Fan-filmed video footage of ANVIL‘s May 30 performance at the Muskelrock festival at Tyrolen in Alvesta, Sweden can be seen below.

ANVIL‘s latest album, “Hope In Hell”, sold a little under 800 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The disc followed up “Juggernaut Of Justice”, which opened with around 1,600 units back in May 2011. The 2009 re-release of the band’s 2007 CD, “This is Thirteen”, registered a first-week tally of 1,400 to enter the Top New Artist Albums chart at No. 19.

ANVIL guitarist/vocalist Steve “Lips” Kudlow told Horns Up Rocks! in a recent interview that the band will spend most of 2015 on the road, but will return to the studio at the end of the year to record the follow-up to 2013’s “Hope In Hell”. He said: “We have a new album pretty much all written, but we’re gonna be busy probably ’till next September. So that’s when we plan to go in and record again.”

ANVIL last year parted ways with bassist Sal Italiano and replaced him with Chris Robertson. Lips told M.E.A.T.‘s Drew Masters that Chris has actually been part of the ANVIL camp for some time now, having been both their rehearsal bassist as well as a member of their road crew. Lips also stated that he’s glad the band is, once again, “all Canadian — that is the heart and soul of ANVIL.”

METALLICA: Official Audio Of ‘The Unforgiven II’ Performance From ROCK IM REVIER Festival

METALLICA played the song “The Unforgiven II” live for the second time ever this past Friday night (May 29) at the Rock Im Revier festival in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. The band has just released an official audio recording of the performance, and it can be streamed using the SoundCloud widget below.

“The Unforgiven II” was first aired during METALLICA‘s December 1997 performance at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas, Nevada. The track, which appeared on METALLICA‘s 1997 album “Reload”, is the sequel to the band’s 1991 song “The Unforgiven”, from METALLICA‘s mega-selling self-titled LP. A second sequel, titled “The Unforgiven III”, was included on the group’s last CD, 2008’s “Death Magnetic”.

Despite insisting that work has been proceeding on a new album, METALLICA has spent a lot of time outside the studio in the last year, with activities that included a string of European all-request shows last summer, a week-long residency on “The Late Show With Craig Ferguson”, and this month’s Rock In Rio USA stint.

More festival dates are on the schedule for this summer, including two shows in Montreal and a headlining slot at Lollapalooza in Chicago at the end of July.

SLAYER Announces ‘Repentless’ Metal Eagle Edition

With the title and release date just announced for SLAYER‘s “Repentless”, due out September 11 (Nuclear Blast), today the thrash icons announce their heaviest release ever – literally — “Repentless”, Metal Eagle Edition. Made of aluminum alloy, measuring 15″ x 17″ x 3″ and weighing in at a hefty seven pounds, the Metal Eagle Edition will house a deluxe digipak of the new “Repentless” CD plus exclusive bonus content to be detailed soon. The limited (only 3000 copies worldwide) and numbered Metal Eagle Edition will be a direct-to-consumer item and available exclusively via the Nuclear Blast mail-order online stores.

The highly anticipated “Repentless” is SLAYER‘s eleventh studio album, the first since 2009’s critically acclaimed, Grammy-nominated “World Painted Blood” and the first with producer Terry Date (PANTERA, SLIPKNOT, SOUNDGARDEN). The band — Tom Araya (bass, vocals), Kerry King (guitar), Paul Bostaph (drums), and Gary Holt (guitar), who recorded lead guitar parts for about a half-dozen of the album’s new tracks — started recording “Repentless” in March 2014, and made the track “Implode” available as a free download in April of that year. The band and Date continued to record between September 2014 and mid-January 2015 at Henson Studios in Los Angeles. For the album, “Implode” was completely re-recorded from the ground up, and “When The Stillness Comes”, used as an instrumental track in a Scion commercial, got a revamped intro and all new vocals.

“Repentless” also includes “Piano Wire”, an unfinished song from the “World Painted Blood” sessions written by Hanneman. About the track, Rolling Stone wrote that it “begins with an eerie guitar line before evolving into a full-on-doom (and classic SLAYER) riff onslaught.” King put it this way: “When I hear it, I think ‘Jeff.’ It sounds like a Jeff Hanneman song.”

The 12-track “Repentless” is, according to those who have heard it, a sonic assault of brutal, ominous, lightening-fast and heavy-as-hell music with lyrics that unmask what SLAYER knows best — the terror, the corruption and the societal turmoil that dominates our world.

“The new album sounds like SLAYER,” said Araya. “In the past, our fans have always known what to expect, this time they don’t. But we really like it, and I don’t think the fans are going to be disappointed.”

As is expected from SLAYER, the band will support the release of “Repentless” with extensive touring across the globe, beginning this summer when the band headlines the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. That tour kicks off June 26 at Sleep Train Amphitheater in San Diego, California.

SLASH: ‘World On Fire’ Performance Clip From ‘Live At The Roxy 25.9.14’ DVD

On September 25, 2014, shortly after the release of their “World On Fire” album, SLASH FEATURING MYLES KENNEDY & THE CONSPIRATORS took the stage at the legendary Roxy Theatre on Sunset Strip in West Hollywood.

The atmospheric venue, steeped in rock history, gave fans a brilliant opportunity to experience the band up close as they delivered a set packed with more recent solo tracks, including several from the new album, and classics from Slash‘s earlier career with GUNS N’ ROSES and VELVET REVOLVER. The intimate setting inspired the band to deliver a scintillating, dynamic performance, due for release on June 15 on 3LP set, as well as 2CD, DVD and Blu-ray.

“Live At The Roxy 25.9.14” track listing:

01. Ghost
02. Nightrain
03. Back From Cali
04. You Could Be Mine
05. Rocket Queen
06. Bent To Fly
07. Starlight
08. You’re A Lie
09. World On Fire
10. Anastasia
11. Sweet Child O’ Mine
12. Slither
13. Paradise City

Additional tracks:

01. Stone Blind
02. You’re Crazy
03. Wicked Stone
04. 30 Years To Life

A performance clip of the song “World On Fire”, taken from “Live At The Roxy 25.9.14”, can be seen below.

Speaking about his working relationship with his backing band THE CONSPIRATORSMyles Kennedy (vocals), Brent Fitz (drums), Todd Kerns (bass) and Frank Sidoris (touring guitarist) — Slash told Australia’s Moshcam: “It’s just something that clicked right from the very beginning. Initially, Myles and I just had that spark, sort of a creative connection, from the very, very beginning. And that’s something that’s established; it always happens when we work together. And then, with Brent and Todd, it’s the same kind of thing where we just have a really great writing and performing and recording chemistry, where everybody just really digs what we are about individually and collectively, and it just works.”

Asked if he thinks more in terms of being a solo artist or as a bandmember, Slash said: “I don’t think I ever really thought in terms of solo artists, per se. Ever since I first started playing guitar, I’ve always been drawn to the band dynamic. But being in a position to steer it where I want it to go, and be more of a captain of the ship was how it first started. And at this point, now that we’ve been working together for a while, it definitely has turned very much into a band. But all if do is spearhead it.”

Slash recently told Classic Rock magazine that he has “already started working” on material for the follow-up to “World On Fire”.

“On the road is the platform that I find is the easiest for me to work on new material,” he said. “It’s easier here than it is for me to do when I’m at home. So I just get going. I take my phone and I record ideas on the phone and then we jam stuff at soundchecks; when we have soundchecks. So we compile a bunch of ideas, and then when the tour is over, we go home and, sort of, hash them out.”

“World On Fire” sold around 29,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 10 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD arrived in stores on September 16, 2014 via Slash‘s own label Dik Hayd International distributed through Roadrunner Records (Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America).

“World On Fire” is the second album to feature Slash‘s regular backing band, MYLES KENNEDY & THE CONSPIRATORS, and follows up 2012’s “Apocalyptic Love”, which sold around 38,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 4 on The Billboard 200 chart.

Slash‘s self-titled debut album scored the highest new entry on The Billboard 200 chart in April 2010, with first-week U.S. sales of around 60,000 copies.

On Slash self-titled solo effort he employed a different vocalist on each track, before settling on ALTER BRIDGE member Kennedy for both touring and eventually recording.

MASTODON Members ‘Murdered’ In Latest ‘Game Of Thrones’ Episode

Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON were featured on the latest episode of HBO‘s smash TV phenomenon “Game Of Thrones”. Band members Brann Dailor, Bill Kelliher and Brent Hinds portrayed wildlings in the episode “Hardhome” that premiered Sunday, May 31 at 9 p.m. with multiple repeat showings during the week. The band was personally invited to participate the show’s creator and executive producer, Dan Weiss, as well as the other executive producers, who are all fans of the band. The scenes were filmed on location in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and the band also got to visit the sets at Titanic Studios.

Dailor describes MASTODON‘s time Beyond The Wall: “It was such an incredible experience to be on set as extras for our collective favorite show, ‘Game Of Thrones’, and to be wildlings murdered and then brought back to life by White Walkers was beyond amazing. I watched my best friends Brent and Bill murdered right in front of me as I myself was stabbed in the stomach and had my throat slit multiple times, and I didn’t mind at all. It made me love being in MASTODON even more.

“We are more than privileged and honored to have been a part of one of the greatest stories ever told on film, and the catering wasn’t bad either.”

MASTODON is featured on the “Game Of Thrones” mixtape “Catch the Throne: The Mixtape Vol. 2” with a new original song, “White Walker”.

The band will spend its summer overseas, performing at all the major European and South American festivals, including Belgium’s Pukkelpop, the prestigious Reading and Leeds in England, as well as the massive Rock In Rio festival in Brazil. They will also support METALLICA for two shows in Russia.

KADAVAR To Release ‘Berlin’ Album In August

Berlin, Germany-based classic rock overlords KADAVAR have completed work on their third album, “Berlin”. The CD was recorded over the last four months and will be released on August 21 via Nuclear Blast.

Commented KADAVAR drummer Tiger: “About ten years ago, when we — independently of one another — moved to Berlin, we just wanted to break free from home and do something new. I thought it was comfortable, to blend in and just live from day to day. A lot of very long nights and so many completely different people at one place. Where there are opposites you can always ground yourself.

“We’re all different, come from different places but have managed to create something together we all like.

“I think the Berlin lifestyle has influenced our band very much and therefore fits perfectly as the album’s title.”
