Long Night’s Journey Into Day is inarguably the sound of a band at the height of their powers. As followers of Redemption are also aware, it is the first full-length since the departure of vocalist Ray Alder, and features the debut of Evergrey vocalist Tom Englund. “We were unable to tour ‘The Art Of Loss‘ because Ray was not able to actively participate in Redemption any longer, so we decided it was time to part company shortly after its release. Ray is a dear friend, and I have nothing but respect and love for him and what we created together. But at some point, it just became untenable.” Of course, Alder’s shoes were not exactly going to be easy to fill, and it was essential that his successor be someone who would immediately command respect, as well as somebody who could exceed expectations when it came to performance. Moreover, it was integral that they had someone who could fully invest in the lyrical themes concerning the human condition, which have always been central to Redemption. So, the fact that from the beginning of his career Englund has penned lyrics about feelings of doubt, fear and despair with an unshakable emotional authenticity made him the perfect choice. “Because of the power of his voice and the emotion he brings, this isn’t going to be a shocking transition for fans. Tom’s also a very versatile vocalist, and being a songwriter, he has a tremendous melodic and compositional sensibility, and on top of that, we’ve known each other for many years, and there is a level of not just professional respect but personal friendship to it all.”

Guitarists Chris Poland (Megadeth, OHM) and Simone Mularoni (DGM) return as guest musicians. When it came to backing up the music with visuals, the band once again turned to a longtime collaborator, Travis Smith, whose humbling resumé includes records by bands such as Art Of Defiance, Opeth and Iced Earth.

Lizzy Borden storms Billboard charts with first album in 11 years, ‘My Midnight Things’

– June 26th, 2018 –

It turns out that the time away from the music scene has not dulled the appetites of hard rock fans for Lizzy Borden, as his new album, My Midnight Things, has already left a deep impression on five different Billboard charts. These placings include #11 on Top New Artist Albums, #17 on Current Hard Music Albums, #43 on Top New Artist Albums Consumption, #46 on Independent Current Albums, and #148 on Top 200 Current Albums. Additionally, the album also made the Canadian charts – hitting #84 on Top Hard Music Charts.

“We live in a streaming world now, where everyone gets their music for free,” explains Lizzy. “But I want to personally thank all the great Lizzy Borden fans out there who shopped online or drove down to your local mom and pop music store and actually paid for my new album. You guys got Lizzy Borden back on the charts! And the fact that you’ve all embraced ‘My Midnight Things‘ in such an amazing way is the icing on the cake. Thanks again, and I will see you all soon on the ‘My Midnight Things‘ tour!”

Released on June 15th via Metal Blade Records, My Midnight Things can be purchased and previewed at: metalblade.com/lizzyborden

Having signed a new contract with Metal Blade on the strength of three demo tracks, Borden opted to produce My Midnight Things himself, with Joey Scott as co-producer, who also handled all the drumming duties. “I knew what I was going for and had doubts that I could find a producer who would understand that,” Borden explains. “My approach is very different than what is happening in today’s current sound.”

The album was also mixed by Greg Fidelman (Metallica, Black Sabbath, Adele, U2) and mastered by Tom Baker (David Bowie, Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, Tom Petty), and is already receiving rave reviews, from Alt Revolt, Pure Grain Audio, and Royal Flush:

Borden paints a ten-song art gallery show and lets the listener decide what he or she sees on the canvas.”Alternative Revolt Magazine

“Catchy riffs and melodies that are sure to be trapped inside your head, bouncing around your skull for days to come.”PureGrainAudio

“The resulting creation yielded what is arguably the strongest vocal performance of Borden‘s career.”Royalflushmagazine.com

Video: ANVIL Performs At Sweden’s MUSKELROCK Festival

Fan-filmed video footage of ANVIL‘s May 30 performance at the Muskelrock festival at Tyrolen in Alvesta, Sweden can be seen below.

ANVIL‘s latest album, “Hope In Hell”, sold a little under 800 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The disc followed up “Juggernaut Of Justice”, which opened with around 1,600 units back in May 2011. The 2009 re-release of the band’s 2007 CD, “This is Thirteen”, registered a first-week tally of 1,400 to enter the Top New Artist Albums chart at No. 19.

ANVIL guitarist/vocalist Steve “Lips” Kudlow told Horns Up Rocks! in a recent interview that the band will spend most of 2015 on the road, but will return to the studio at the end of the year to record the follow-up to 2013’s “Hope In Hell”. He said: “We have a new album pretty much all written, but we’re gonna be busy probably ’till next September. So that’s when we plan to go in and record again.”

ANVIL last year parted ways with bassist Sal Italiano and replaced him with Chris Robertson. Lips told M.E.A.T.‘s Drew Masters that Chris has actually been part of the ANVIL camp for some time now, having been both their rehearsal bassist as well as a member of their road crew. Lips also stated that he’s glad the band is, once again, “all Canadian — that is the heart and soul of ANVIL.”

Arsis Reveals New Drummer Shawn Priest

The Virginia melodic death metal veterans in Arsis have announced Shawn Priest as the full-time replacement for recently departed drummer, Mike VanDyne. Priest, who has toured with Arsis in the past, will be behind the kit for the band’s upcoming fifth studio album.

Commented Priest, “After several major tours with Arsis since 2008, I am more than happy to take the position of full-time drummer. These guys have become some of my best friends and based on the new material we’ve been putting together, I think the new record will be one of the best and most extreme Arsis releases to date. Get stoked people.”

“I am beyond thrilled with the pre-production for the new album and the addition of Shawn Priest on drums,” said guitarist/vocalist, James Malone. “Shawn has done many tours for Arsis and felt we it was time to give him the respect he deserves and bring him on as the full-time drummer. Shawn’s input into the new songs has made them more intense than I could have ever imagined.”

“We weren’t looking for a drummer who robotically plays a thousand miles an hour,” added bassist, Noah Martin. “Anyone who’s seen us with Shawn knows he’s capable of playing pretty much anything, but with tremendous feel. We’ve put him through hell, hiring him to fill in on multiple tours over the years, and we’re glad we can welcome him to the fold.

“That being said, we understand and respect the decision Mike made, given the circumstances. I know I speak for all of us when I say it wasn’t necessarily an easy one to make. His involvement helped get the band to where it is today, and we’ll always miss playing with him.

“We have nine songs so far that we’re continuing to tweak, and still tossing around ideas forcover tunes. We hope to create a pivotal album that sums up everything that Arsis was, is and will be.”

Arsis is currently in the pre-production stages of its impending full-length with producer, Mark Lewis. The new record will serve as the follow-up to 2010’s, “Starve For The Devil” (reviewed here), which sold 1,800 copies in the United States in its first week of release, landing at #13 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart.

“I’m truly excited to be producing the new Arsis record,” said Lewis. “The new material I’ve been hearing from James is nothing short of awesome. I’m such a huge fan of A Celebration of Guilt, as well as A Diamond For Disease, which was produced by my Audiohammer colleague, Eyal Levi. This new material sees the band come full circle and I’m so stoked they’ve landed here at Audiohammer. It’s about time!”

The band has posted a updated pre-production version of the new track, “Choking On Sand,” online at this location to show off Priest’s punishing percussionary prowess, and to give fans a glimpse of what to expect on the upcoming album.

“I feel it is safe to say that this is going to be the most brutal Arsis album to date,” added Malone. “So excited!”

Stay tuned to the official Arsis Facebook page for the latest information.
