You can’t talk about the true greats of folk-inspired melodic death metal without reverent mention of Ensiferum, and with Two Paths they once more affirm their place in the pantheons of the genre. Further building upon the thrilling metallic hybrid honed across six full-lengths, Two Paths is simultaneously the Finnish quintet’s most epic and far-reaching collection and their most organic, which definitely sets it apart from the pack. Additionally, the album literally takes the concept of Two Paths to heart, with two different versions of standout tracks “Don’t You Say” and “God Is Dead”. “Even though Ensiferum has always had clean vocals and choirs, harsh vocals have been the main style, and those songs worked so well with both styles that we decided to include both versions,” explains bassist/vocalist Sami Hinkka. With Mikko P. Mustonen again handling orchestral arrangements and Lassi Logren returning to play nyckelharpa and violin on a few songs, Hinkka is also more than happy that they brought “more bombastic orchestral and down to earth folk aspects” to the record, further fleshing out their vision. This also applies to the contribution of Gyula Havancsak, who provided the artwork for both Two Paths and its predecessor, One Man Army. “It was really nice to work with him again because he always wants to hear our ideas and then he adds his own magic and improvements to them, and the result is always astonishing.”

Two Paths track-listing
1. Ajattomasta Unesta
2. For Those About to Fight for Metal
3. Way of the Warrior
4. Two Paths
5. King of Storms
6. Feast with Valkyries

Crimfall premieres video for new single “Until Falls The Rain”

– August 16th, 2017 –

On August 25th, Finnish cinemascope metallers Crimfall will release their new album, Amain, worldwide via Metal Blade Records! Crimfall has now premiered the first video clip in support of the new album. Please visit youtube.com/watch?v=VcTmunax5OE to see the video for the new single “Until Falls the Rain”!

Crimfall comments: “Before we unleash the third storm that is ‘Amain‘, we present you our very first music video. ‘Until Falls The Rain’ is the crushing conclusion for the album, last simmering truths are laid low, throats bared against the unforgiving fall. It was a long day of drowning under homemade sprinklers, shooing away fire brigades and mopping away thousand lakes of water. In the end we are more than satisfied with the forlorn end result.”

The video was directed by Olli Hakkinen and shot by Max Smeds.

For more previews of Amain, both singles “The Last of Stands” and “Mother Of Unbelievers” can be heard at: metalblade.com/crimfall – where the record can be pre-ordered in the following formats:

–limited Digipak CD with exclusive bonus tracks (acoustic and instrumental songs)
–180g black vinyl
–red/black marbled vinyl (EU exclusive – limited to 300 copies)
–skin colored marbled vinyl (EU exclusive – limited to 200 copies)
–bluish gray marbled vinyl (USA exclusive – limited to 100 copies)
* exclusive bundles with a shirt, plus digital options are also available!

Amain is Crimfall‘s most ambitious album yet, combining familiar elements with fresh inspiration, and wreathed in massive crisp production from Fascination Street Studios. Featuring music that spans from monumental orchestrations to songs whispered over fading pyres, Amain contains layers upon layers of grand melodies woven between jagged shadows. On this new release, Crimfall also continues to sing the stories of wars waged in vain, advocating freedom from religious dogmas and the bloody chains of tradition.

Amain track-listing:
1. Eschaton

3. Ten Winters Apart – pt1. Far From Any Fate
4. Ten Winters Apart – pt2. Song of Mourn

GWAR Announces North American Fall Tour

– August 15th, 2017 –

New Album “The Blood of Gods” Out October 20th via Metal Blade Records

On October 20th, GWAR will release a new studio album entitled “The Blood of Gods” via Metal Blade Records. In support of the new album, your Lords and Masters will leave their arctic slumber and return to the road to cause aural (and anal) devastation across North America. Joining in the chaos will be Ghoul, Doyle (10/20-11/5), He Is Legend (11/7-12/10) and U.S. Bastards. The tour kicks off in Richmond, VA on October 20th and runs through December 10th in Detroit, MI. The tour includes a stop in New York City on Halloween as well! A complete list of dates can be found below.

The Berserker Blothar had this to say about the upcoming tour:
Humans, we are coming to tear your world apart with a live performance the likes of which has never been seen on this or any other planet! This album, “The Blood of Gods,” is the greatest thing since French toast. Just hearing these songs performed will result in an instant paroxysm of weeping, gnashing of teeth, and the uncontrollable voiding of your filthy bowels. Now, we are taking the whole bloody shit show on the road, with the most spectacular, blood-drenched, gruesome, and terrifying rock concert of all time. Don’t miss your chance to sacrifice yourself to GWAR at a venue near you!

Bohabs! Be the coolest corpse in the pile! Don’t miss your chance to pledge your allegiance to GWAR each night when they rape and pillage your town. Head to gwarvip.com to take part in “The Lords and Masters VIP Experience“.

General admission tickets and VIP Packages go on sale to the public this Friday August 18th at 10:00 AM Eastern.

The Lords and Masters VIP Experience Includes:
• One (1) General Admission Ticket with Venue Early Entry (potentially guest list)
• Exclusive access to GWAR soundcheck where you will pledge allegiance to your Lords & Masters!
• Invitation to play a GWAR instrument onstage at soundcheck
• Tour of the weapons of your Lords & Masters
• Crowd Free Merch Access
• One (1) Souvenir item signed by members of GWAR
• One (1) Souvenir GWAR laminate
• Photo opportunity with GWAR before the show
• You will be killed by GWAR on stage during the show
• Designated Slave Pit Area to pledge your allegiance before you are killed on stage by GWAR!

There are only 5 VIP TICKETS available per show, that’s it so don’t wait.

Concerning the album: “The Blood of Gods” is nothing less than a sacred text chronicling the rise of humanity against their makers, and the massive battle between GWAR and the forces of all that is uptight and wrong with the world. Along the way, the band challenges the sins of their great mistake, from politics, pollution, and organized religion, to fast food, and factory farming. Humans are shown as what they are; a parasitic disease that must be eradicated before they suck the planet dry. Meanwhile, Sleazy P. Martini, the crooked entrepreneur who discovered the Scumdogs, and has always envisioned them as a sort of horrific boy band, finally managed to convince the group to write a hit song called “I’ll Be Your Monster.” If all goes according to plan, it may be just stupid enough to work!

Act of Defiance to release new full-length album, ‘Old Scars, New Wounds’, on September 29th

– August 8th, 2017 –

Video for new single, “M.I.A.”, now online

With their 2015 debut, Birth And The Burial, metal band Act of Defiance – featuring Chris Broderick on guitar, Henry Derek on vocals, Shawn Drover on drums and Matt Bachand on bass – delivered a blast of pure and unadulterated metal that ignored fads and hit home hard. This year, the band returns with their sinister new album, entitled Old Scars, New Wounds, hitting retailers on September 29th via Metal Blade Records.

Today, you can watch a full performance video for the album’s intro track, “M.I.A.”, via metalblade.com/actofdefiance. The video was put together by Robert Graves (ashadowbeyond.com).

You can also pre-order the album now at the same link, in the following formats:

–CD
–180g Black Vinyl (EU exclusive)
–Golden Vinyl (EU exclusive – limited to 100 copies)
–Auburn Marbled Vinyl (US exclusive – limited to 300 copies)

On Old Scars, New Wounds, Act of Defiance has upped the ante. Each of the 11new tracks sound fresh and urgent while wielding a timeless quality that will connect powerfully with metal fans new and old – and there aren’t many contemporary bands who can make such a claim.

Naturally blending a plethora of metallic styles and never recycling ideas, Old Scars, New Wounds is an even more dynamic and diverse collection than its predecessor, which was written solely by Broderick and Drover prior to recruiting bassist Matt Bachand and vocalist Henry Derek. With a fully-seasoned, tour-hardened band in place, there was room for everyone to bring something to the table this time around, and their varying styles helped shape the record.

The title – plucked from the blistering track “Conspiracy Of The Gods” – stands as a metaphor for life in general, and the breadth of lyrical matter covered is as broad as the styles of heavy music found on the record. “Another Killing Spree” looks at hardcore drug use, while “Lullaby Of Vengeance” is an angry song about singing angry lyrics, and “Overexposure” is an anthem dedicated to not selling out. There is also some very topical material, most notably on “Mis-Information Age” and “Broken Dialect”.

“‘Mis-Information Age’ is very applicable in today’s social climate, where we can no longer blindly trust the source of facts that determine our view,” Broderick explains. “It asserts that we should be skeptical, making sure we have the truth and not someone’s propaganda, while ‘Broken Dialect’ conveys the idea that people can no longer hold a conversation with each other where their views differ, instead turning to sources that only support the view they want to hold on to.”

With every track featuring a blistering solo from Broderick, fans of his shredding can rest assured that the guitarist has not held back – though that was not his initial intention. “I actually wanted to tone it down a bit technically in terms of my solos, but the opposite happened! This was because I inadvertently ended up creating a few new techniques to use in my trick bag and saw their potential, so I worked really hard on the execution so they could make the record.”

Old Scars, New Wounds track-listing:
1. M.I.A.
2. Molten Core
3. Overexposure
4. The Talisman
5. Lullaby of Vengeance
6. Circle of Ashes
7. Reborn
8. Conspiracy of the Gods
9. Another Killing Spree
10. Broken Dialect
11. Rise of Rebellion

Going into writing the record, the quartet had no grand plan, and spread across the continental US, the individual members worked separately, bouncing demos back and forth and building on each others’ ideas. Like many contemporary bands, through taking advantage of available technologies they made a record that is very much a collaborative effort, despite the distances lying between the members’ home bases. Recruiting producer Dave Otero (Cattle Decapitation, Allegaeon) they tracked the record likewise, with Broderick laying down guitars in his own Ill-Fated Studios in LA, Derek and Broderick’s vocals tracked at Red Light Studios also in LA, with Bachand tracking his contributions at Manshark in South Hampton, MA and Drover’s drums were laid down at Atlanta’s Glow In The Dark Studios.

Having proven themselves on the road in support of Birth And The Burial both as headliners and supporting the likes of Killswitch Engage, Hellyeah and Hatebreed, the band are looking ahead to the expansive touring that will accompany Old Scars, New Wounds, and their hunger to get back in front of crowds has not abated in the slightest. Upcoming touring plans are set to be announced very soon.

Stay tuned for more news, tracks and videos coming from Act of Defiance, in anticipation of the release of Old Scars, New Wounds.

Bloodstock Festival Reveals Rock And Metal Museum’s 2017 Exhibitors

UK’s Bloodstock Festival (also know as Bloodstock Open Air) has become in recent years, one of Europe’s most illustrious Metal gatherings. An undeniable proof of the fest’s panache is the inclusion of bands like Blind Guardian, Megadeth, Amon Amarth, Ghost, Testament, Kreator, Hatebreed, Arch Enemy in the 2017 line-up. This event also sponsors the Rock And Metal Museum (RAM)—a gallery that exhibits original artworks and other items related with Heavy Metal visual imagery. The upcoming edition will take place from August 10th to 13th within Bloodstock’s premises and promises to be a true feast for the senses. Let’s meet some of this year’s exhibitors.

PAUL RAYMOND GREGORY
This illustrious British artist is Bloodstock’s mastermind and the creator of RAM. He has painted dozens of album covers for collectives like Saxon, Dio, Blind Guardian, and is also well-known for his gigantic J.R.R Tolkien-inspired canvases. His leading role has proven crucial fro the development of both the gallery through the years.

Gregory explains: “I had my own gallery many years ago holding some notable exhibitions. I decided to sell the gallery to concentrate on my own work which was inspired by Tolkien’s fictional universe. It was one of my Tolkien pieces that came to the attention of Saxon’s manager in 1983 the album was Crusader released in 1984. In 2014 I decided to celebrate my thirtieth anniversary with the music industry by returning to my roots with a gallery at Bloodstock… The gallery will always be adding new artists, authors, photographers and any other talented muse we feel will sit well with the gallery and its aims. I never looked upon it as a money-spinner. For me was a passion that I wanted to create something that was unique and that I could see developing. So I think for me it has to be the passion of doing something you want to do, and that is how it has worked.”

Check out Paul Raymond Gregory’s epic paintings and illustrations at: www.studio54.co.uk

ELIRAN KANTOR
This is the first time that Israeli visionary, Eliran Kantor, exhibits his works at the Rock And Metal Museum. Widely known for his arresting cover illustrations for Testament, Sigh, Atheist, Soulfly, Iced Earth, etc. this Berlin-based artist is considered of the greatest artists working in the Metal scene today.

Regarding his RAM participation, Kantor comments: “I’m very excited about being invited to attend the RAM at Bloodstock this year by Paul Raymond Gregory. There will be 5 of my pieces added to the permanent collection and on display this year. Not sure I can say which one – come and see for yourself!”

See more of Eliran Kantor’s work at: www.elirankantor.com

AND JUSTICE FOR ART
This is the second consecutive year that the book “And Justice For Art” will be exhibited at the Rock And Metal Museum. The difference is that this time, author Ramon Martos-Garcia will be exhibiting the Revised Edition of this 264-color pages volume. The new edition includes more than 450 images and 105 exclusive interviews with members of Amorphis, Slayer, Cradle Of Filth, Carcass, Cattle Decapitation, Anthrax, Enslaved, Cormorant, At The Gates, Katatonia, etc. regarding the creation of some of Metal’s most iconic album covers.

When asked why he decided to create a revised edition of the book, author Martos-Garcia says: “I didn’t want to just re-print the same book again. I had new material available—new images and commentaries. So, I decided to add as much as I could and bring something new to the table while keeping intact the essence of previous edition. There are new comments, more graphics, but it’s still the same book… dramatically improved and updated.”

A signed copy of “And Justice For Art” will be given away to a lucky Bloodstock ticket holder. Check out the book exclusively at the official store: www.andjusticeforart.bigcartel.com

CHRISTIAN SLOAN HALL
American illustrator, Christian Sloan Hall has been widely praised for his striking, Viking-inspired illustrations for Swedish metallers, Amon Amarth. In addition, he’s also produced visuals for Dimmu Borgir, Testament, Sunn o))), etc. He’s already familiar with RAM and Bloodstock. Last year, he created an exclusive artwork for the Rock And Metal Museum—personally commissioned by Bloodstock’s main man, Paul Raymond Gregory.

“Amon Amarth are headlining this year, so Paul thought it would be cool to display some of the work I’ve done for them over the years,” Sloan Hall comments. “Two of the battle scenes I’ve done for them that have been used for backdrops will be on show, as well as some of the illustrations I’ve done for tour shirts, and a few others like some pieces I’ve done for DC snowboards, etc… Events like RAM are beyond important. The once flourishing illustration industry has been a dying one for decades, struggling to survive in the face of constant exploitation and digital emulation. Events like this are crucial in the battle to keep the industry alive but restore Illustration and art to its former glory. I’m greatly honored to be able to be a part of it!”

PAUL HARRIES
Paul Harries’s photo-portfolio includes shots of Rock/Metal luminaries such as Metallica, Nirvana, Ghost, Muse, Green Day, AC/DC and Osbourne, among many others. He’s currently one of Kerrang! magazine’s leading photographers and has even published a Slipknot-inspired photo-book titled, “Slipknot: Dysfunctional Family Portraits.”

“I have not expectations really, I just like to show my work,” the British photographer admits. “The images on show will be from Lemmy, Slipknot, Ghost, Slash, Lamb Of God and Lizzy Hale. I thought this selection would fit in nicely with the Bloodstock vibe… Prints are available to purchase so if I sell a few that will be great.”

CYNOSURE GUITARS
Custom-made Cynosure guitars and basses, have been part of the Rock And Metal Museum for years. Hailing from England, these super-exclusive instruments have become one of RAM’s focus of attention. “Cynosure can be defined as ‘something that attracts attention by its brilliance’,” says mastermind, Oliver Andrew. “Paul Gregory appreciated my postmodern approach to visualization of the instruments and requested that I showcase my “fantastical” instruments among his artwork. The whole experience was most humbling, having some of my favorite artists and bands take notice of my art, not only offering their opinions, but expressing genuine admiration for my work.”

Over the years, Gregory has commissioned several Cynosure guitars, exclusively for Bloodstock and RAM, including the official RAM guitar, and Motorhead and Saxon-inspired six strings. “The guitars built for Paul Raymond Gregory, have been played by bands such as, Carcass, Emperor, Crowbar and Dave Mustaine of Megadeth,” Andrew says. “The idea is to create a guitar that would be multi-faceted, an art-piece that would be recognized as such, however, still maintaining its distinction as a playable instrument.”
