Eluveitie Reveals New Album “Ategnatos” Details

We all wade through archetypes. We all ARE archetypes. Distant echoes of a life both primeval and noble. To embrace these archetypes, to accept them not only as a part of life but as life itself is what some may call enlightenment, some peace of mind. Eluveitie call it “Ategnatos.” And by using their longest gap between two Metal albums to gather momentum, they just forged their strongest album around it.

The new album “Ategnatos” will be released on April 5th 2019 via Nuclear Blast.

On an album both mystical and philosophical, Eluveitie propel mythology, pagan belief and spirituality into our modern world. “This one almost became something like a socio-critical uncovering work,” says Chrigel, “some kind of a revelation, a doomsday prophecy. Dark and severe in its atmosphere and charisma, and also occult, arcane and elitist.” The album itself is a manifesto, a fast-paced, highly dramatic and embellished work on which today’s society sees itself in the mirror of ancient Celtic mythology and knowledge. “The image, of course, is blood-curling”, Chrigel adds with a bitter grin. “At least to those with eyes to see.” Far more that a pessimistic swan song for our world, however, ‘Ategnatos’ holds the cathartic promise of renewal. “Ategnatos is the Gaulish word for ‘reborn’,” Chrigel explains. “To the sharpened mind, it points out the concealed, long forgotten key to change and renewal.” This, naturally, comes at a price. “There’s always suffering before bliss. And always darkness before light.”

A work based on archaic archetypes and the ancient concept of renewal, »Ategnatos« unfolds an elemental force to be reckoned with. “These archetypes are still within us. People didn’t change that much during the last 3000 years – and men were always just men.” No wonder the album follows a decidedly darker, monumental tone that suits them very well. Of course, Eluveitie have long found their very own trademark sound, a sonic adventure often copied but never overcome. With “Ategnatos,” the dedicated nine-piece not only worked with a real string quartet (a premiere!) and granted Fabienne Erni’s sublime mastery of the harp the room it deserved; they also undertook a holistic upgrade resulting in some of the most catchy, most aggressive or most epic tunes the Swiss Metal nobility has ever offered.

Recordings took place in their beloved New Sound Studio with their engineer of choice Tommy Vetterli. “Yet it was radically different as we only had four weeks to record this time around – as compared to the eight weeks we had for ‘Origins’.” By taking mixing duties to the skilled hand of renowned studio wizard Jens Bogren in his Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden, Eluveitie returned to the very spot where they mixed their now legendary “Slania” album more than ten years ago.

The cover artwork will be revealed on the band’s official Instagram in the next upcoming days, starting tomorrow.

King Diamond announces NYC release party for DVD/Blu-ray, ‘Songs For The Dead Live’

– January 16th, 2019 –

On January 25th, King Diamond will release a new DVD/Blu-ray, Songs For The Dead Live, via Metal Blade Records. To celebrate this DVD/Blu-ray, a release party will take place at Saint Vitus in Brooklyn, NY on February 6th at 7PM. Featuring an appearance by Abigail, this event will include a showing of both shows from Songs For The Dead Live: Belgium’s Graspop Metal Meeting in June 2016 and Philadelphia’s Fillmore in November 2015, both of which contain a brace of classic King Diamond and Mercyful Fate tracks before launching into Abigail. To RSVP, please email: kingdiamondparty@gmail.com

There is only one King Diamond, and for more than thirty years the great Dane has been dropping classic albums and putting on shows fans remember for the rest of their lives. Perhaps the only downside to having such a formidable catalogue is that there are just too many great songs to fit into a single set. However, you would be hard-pressed to find a fan who wouldn’t want to hear 1987′s seminal Abigail in its entirety, and Songs For The Dead Live captures this, twice, and in very different locales. The performances of the all-star lineup of musicians, comprising of guitarists Andy LaRocque and Mike Wead, bassist Pontus Egberg and drummer Matt Thompson, are absolutely ferocious, hammering home every single moment.

For a preview of Songs For The Dead Live, videos for “Arrival (Live at Graspop)” and “Sleepless Nights (Live at The Fillmore)” can be viewed at: metalblade.com/kingdiamond – where Songs For The Dead Live can also be pre-ordered in the following formats:

–2DVD/CD 6-Panel Digipak
–Blu-ray (includes audio digital download of Philadelphia Show)
–opaque blue with white splatter vinyl (US retail exclusive – limited to 600 copies)
–root beer marbled vinyl (US webstore exclusive – limited to 250 copies)
–clear pale orange marbled vinyl (US webstore exclusive – limited to 250 copies)
–180g black vinyl (EU exclusive)
–transparent amber marbled vinyl (EU exclusive – limited to 700 copies)
–clear ghost white vinyl (EU exclusive – limited to 500 copies)
–orange-brown/black marbled vinyl (EU exclusive – limited to 300 copies)
–black/purple melt vinyl (Nuclear Blast exclusive – limited to 200 copies)
–orange/red marbled vinyl (Napalm exclusive – limited to 300 copies)
–clear lavender marbled vinyl (EMP exclusive – limited to 200 copies)
–clear ash grey marbled vinyl (Bengan exclusive – limited to 200 copies)
–pink blue marbled vinyl (Ebay exclusive – limited to 200 copies)

Captured on film by director Denise Korycki for Wild Wind Productions, she worked closely with King on every aspect of filming, and throughout the viewer finds themselves front and center as the shows unfold. This includes some inventive camera placement, such as riding in on the back of the wheelchair as it is wheeled out to “Out From The Asylum” at the start of the show, or looking up from the coffin at the commencement of Abigail opener “Funeral”, which adds an extra dimension to proceedings. Naturally, the theatricality that has become synonymous with King Diamond is there in full force, making for an even more immersive experience. The gothic stage set and the participation of actors playing out certain scenes tying into the songs definitely increases the drama and the sense of complete disconnect from the trappings of reality, ensuring that the shows remain riveting from start to finish.

While the setlists are virtually identical, the drastic difference in the two venues make for distinctly different atmospheres. The sweeping, epic scale of Graspop and the virtual sea of baying metalheads makes for a particularly thrilling spectacle, King holding them all in the palm of his hand. The Fillmore show is immediately more intimate, and rather than a mixed bag of metal lovers drunk on a weekend of the heavy stuff, the audience is comprised entirely of the King Diamond devout, screaming back every word, their love for their hero bleeding from every frame. Songs For The Dead Live gives those who missed out on seeing these shows in the flesh a chance to vividly experience them, offering so much deeper an experience than your run of the mill live DVD.

Whitechapel launches new single, “Third Depth”

– January 15th, 2019 –

Artwork by Branca Studio

On March 29th, Whitechapel will release their 7th full-length, The Valley, via Metal Blade Records. Mixed by David Castillo, mastered by Ted Jensen, and produced once again by Mark Lewis (Cannibal Corpse, The Black Dahlia Murder), The Valley is a reference to the part of Hardin Valley (west of Knoxville, Tennessee) where vocalist Phil Bozeman grew up. Set against this backdrop, he approaches his subject matter unflinchingly, building upon everything that came before, making it clear that he has survived that which he was forced to endure and is not afraid to confront it. “Phil has been upfront in his lyrics in the past about hardships he endured in his life as a child, and I believe with this record we tried to paint a better picture of that,” says guitarist Alex Wade, who alongside his bandmates, stands 100% behind everything their vocalist has to say. “I feel our music is Phil’s release from his past, being able to get it out and speak about it, and hopefully anyone who hears it that may have gone through similar experiences can find some release in it as well.”

For a preview of The Valley, the new single “Third Depth” can be heard now at: youtu.be/6LUWVC9jspg

To hear the previously released tracks (“Brimstone” and “Black Bear”), please visit: metalblade.com/whitechapel – where the album can also be pre-ordered in the following formats:

Anyone throwing The Valley on for the first time will immediately recognize it as the work of Whitechapel, yet as has been the case with each release, there is also evolution in play. “Sound-wise, it’s all over the place,” Bozeman states plainly. “There’s aggression, and then you’re hit with ominous and emotional guitar riffs. It’s mean, but then transfers to soft and inviting. It’s a whirlwind of emotions throughout.”

Týr reveals details for new album, ‘Hel’

– January 10th, 2019 –

Launches first single, “Fire and Flame”

On March 8th, the Faroe Islands’ Týr will release their eighth full-length, Hel, via Metal Blade Records. Hel is a collection of ruthlessly melodic and irresistibly compelling progressive folk metal that will immediately resonate with any who have followed the band at any point over the two decades of their storied career. For a preview of the album, the first single, “Fire and Flame”, can be heard at: metalblade.com/tyr – where Hel can also be pre-ordered in the following formats:

–digipak-CD
–box set (digipak CD, drinking horn, leather belt clip, poster, autographed photo card – limited to 1000 copies)
–steel-blue / gray marbled vinyl (US retail exclusive – limited to 500 copies)
–clear mushroom brown marbled vinyl (US webstore exclusive – limited to 200 copies)
–blue / white / black / red splatter vinyl (US webstore exclusive – limited to 100 copies)
–180g black vinyl (EU exclusive)
–turquoise blue marbled vinyl (EU exclusive – limited to 500 copies)
–clear / blue marbled vinyl (EU exclusive – limited to 300 copies)
–bordeaux red /black marbled vinyl (EMP exclusive – limited to 200 copies)
–olive marbled vinyl (Nuclear Blast exclusive – limited to 200 copies)
–white / blue marbled vinyl (Tutl exclusive – limited to 100 copies)

Known for their prolific nature – dropping their first five full-lengths in the space of just seven years – the six-year gap between Valkyrja (2013) and Hel is by far the longest between any two of their records. During that period the band toured hard, taking the album around the world, including a support run with Children Of Bodom in North America and an appearance on the 70,000 Tons Of Metal cruise. However, other factors played into this extended break between releases. “We approached this one differently because I learned that if I continue doing albums in the way we had up to now, I would die from a heart attack before I’m 50!” says guitarist/vocalist Heri Joensen. “That’s one of the reasons we changed our method and took such a long time on this one.” That this tactic – which also includes more songwriting contributions from bassist/vocalist Gunnar Thomsen and guitarist Terji Skibenæs than on previous releases – has been beneficial is borne out in the finished product, which is perhaps more immersive than those that came before. “Musically it leans a bit towards our album, ‘Ragnarok‘ (2005),” states Thomsen. “It’s a bit more epic and also much better worked through than any of our previous albums.” It also marks the recording debut of drummer Tadeusz Rieckmann, who has manned the drum throne for Týr‘s live shows since 2016.

Hel track-listing:
1. Gates of Hel
2. All Heroes Fall
3. Ragnars Kvæði
4. Garmr
5. Sunset Shore
6. Downhill Drunk
7. Empire of the North
8. Far from the Worries of the World
9. King of Time
10. Fire and Flame

12. Songs of War

King Diamond launches new video, “Arrival (Live at Graspop)”, from upcoming DVD/Blu-ray, ‘Songs For The Dead Live’

– January 8th, 2019 –

On January 25th, King Diamond will release a new DVD/Blu-ray, Songs For The Dead Live, via Metal Blade Records.

Boasting eighteen songs per set, each of the two shows – Belgium’s Graspop Metal Meeting in June 2016 and Philadelphia’s Fillmore in November 2015 – feature a brace of classic King Diamond and Mercyful Fate tracks including “Welcome Home,” “Halloween,” and “Eye Of The Witch” before launching into Abigail. The performances of the all-star lineup of musicians, comprising of guitarists Andy LaRocque and Mike Wead, bassist Pontus Egberg and drummer Matt Thompson, are absolutely ferocious, hammering home every single moment.

For a preview of Songs For The Dead Live, a new video, “Arrival (Live at Graspop)”, can be viewed at: youtube.com/watch?v=zCElPIPWfWQ

Fans can also watch “Sleepless Nights (Live at The Fillmore)” at: metalblade.com/kingdiamond – where Songs For The Dead Live can be pre-ordered in the following formats:

–2DVD/CD 6-Panel Digipak
–Blu-ray (includes audio digital download of Philadelphia Show)
–special edition box set with 5 discs (2DVD, 2CD, 1 Blu-ray) plus poster, flier, laminate, setlist, ticket, sticker, and guitar pick (limited to 3000 copies)
–opaque blue with white splatter vinyl (US retail exclusive – limited to 600 copies)
–opaque red with black splatter vinyl (US webstore exclusive – limited to 200 copies)
–opaque white with black splatter vinyl (US webstore exclusive – limited to 200 copies)

Whitechapel launches new single, “Black Bear”

– December 13th, 2018 –

For a preview of The Valley, the new single “Black Bear” can be heard now at: youtu.be/X7pvYfWD1P0

Stay tuned for more news about The Valley coming soon!
